A diabetic in basel... :) insurance coverage?

Good evening !

My daughter is 3,5 yo and is a diabetic. We intend to move in Basel until summer and I wanted to gather as much information regarding her Insurance, as well as any exceptions applied to a diabetic etc.
Could anyone provide me information on anything on the above or anything related? (maybe from personal experience too???)

thank you in advance!

The Swiss insurance companies MUST accept everyone at no extra charges.

...for basic coverage only. For anything that exceeds basic coverage, they can (and do) exclude certain conditions from coverage or refuse to insure you point blank.

Do a search on here for diabetes. We have a couple of members with children who are diabetics and Swisspea in particular can give you loads of tips about coping here.

Usually, you pick up the medication from the pharmacy and they bill your insurance company directly. If you have an excess (which you shouldn't have on a child), then your insurance company bill you.

I've heard some companies require you to pay then get reimbursed. Avoid such companies.

There is no "public" insurance in Switzerland. There is "Grundversorgung" ("basic cover"), which is a standard level of care and provided by private insurance. Each private insurance that offers coverage in your canton of residence must accept you for this. Some insurance companies offer "add-ons" (dental cover, better choice of hospitals, better treatment abroad, coverage of treatments not covered by basic insurance etc.). For these policies, insurance companies have a choice whether or not to accept you.

Basic insurance has an excess ("franchise", i.e. the first x CHF per year that you incur in medical bills are not covered by insurance, minimum is CHF 300 for adults and CHF zero for children) and a contribution to each bill (10% of each bill, capped at CHF 700 per year for adults and CHF 350 per year for children).

Basic coverage pays for insulin and other medication required by diabetics. Just choose the lowest franchise (excess) available. The savings on the monthly premiums are typically less than what you'd pay for medication.
