Changing Franchise on health insurance

I'm writing to ask if it's usual for insurance providers to be unwilling to change the franchise (deductible?) once it has been set. My boyfriend tried to change his to a lower number with EKG insurance, but they were unwilling to change it. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

Well of course they won't let you lower it lol, unless the premium is the same, in fact they would themselves recommend that you reduce it. You can however increase the franchise as that means the insurance company takes less risk and you take more.

Your boyfriend clearly anticipates a high bill and wants to arb the insurance company. You can however switch insurances half way through the year I believe (I think this is only possible if they increase the premium though), and change the deductible as part of the process.

Yeah, I see what you mean about how it makes sense that one could not decrease the franchise right before you want to run up a lot of bills However, he was under the impression that he was allowed to for some reason. He hasn't received a letter saying the premium will increase on May 1st. It went up at the usual time, at the start of the new year.

Re: Changing Franchise on health insurance

He is allowed to change providers / franchises or whatever he wants as long as he does it at the end of every year. There are many threads about this, but to keep it short, he has to serve notice on them by registered post before the end of November and arrange for the new cover to start from first of Jan.

Re: Changing Franchise on health insurance

He can change the deductible every year as long as he gives them one months notice for the end of the year (i.e. before the 30th of November).

There has been a mid-year increase with EGK but this doesn't give you the right to change deductibles.

However, he has every right to go elsewhere from 01.05.12 - 31.12.12 with the same deductible and then change it for the 01.01.13 as long as he let's them know before the 30.11.12.

Hope that makes sense?!

Bondalu has become a little unpopular
Re: Changing Franchise on health insurance

Being another of those affected by the EGK hike can anyone recommend another health insurance provider at the lower price end. I'm looking on comparis and there are around a dozen quoted under 380 (deductible 500).
