EHIC ( European Health Insurance Card )

Don't know how many UK pensioners are living here that read this forum, but have been informed today by the KVG that if you have an E.H.I.C. (European Health Insurance Card) that is issued by the Swiss authorities, this will cease at the end of the month and you will need one issued by the UK from April to continue your cover, this may also apply to non pensioners as well.

Re: EHIC ( European Health Insurance Card )

If you are entitled to free health care in Britain, AND you have no Swiss AHV pension, you are entitled to basic Swiss health care KVG free of charge.

Maybe what you are reporting refers to these UK pensioners?

Re: EHIC ( European Health Insurance Card )

As it was explained to me yesterday, the normal Swiss health cover provided in Switzerland by the Swiss health care system is as per normal, no change. It is only if you go on holiday etc outside Switzerland and need medical help, where in the past the EHIC issued by the Swiss would kick in, you now need an EHIC issued by the UK, assuming you qualify for it under the UK rules.

What does that mean, sorry. As UK pensioners here in CH, we have free medical Insurance/treatment here (with a franchise and 10% to pay) with an EHIC issued here. We are no longer able to access UK NHS as we are resident here and CH and pay all taxes here. So does that new rule apply to us?

I'd be interested to know if anybody has found a Swiss Insurance that covers the 10%? Would be very grateful for any info, thanks.

Re: EHIC ( European Health Insurance Card )

As I understand it, if you use your EHIC whilst out of Switzerland, if you fall ill whilst on holiday for instance, until the end of March you would normally claim from the Swiss system for payment. Under a rule change between Switzerland and the UK that comes into effect from the start of April you would claim from the UK who would issue the new EHIC for persons retired abroad.
I actually spoke to the overseas team at Newcastle today who were aware of this change, but as usual have a backlog to catch up on.

Thanks -

may I ask again, does anyone know of a Swiss Insurance that would agree to issue a policy to pay the 10% of medical bills?

I thought everybody had to pay 10% of the bill once they had reached their franchise up to a maximum amount (700 chf I think but not sure). I would be very happy to find out that that's not the case though.

Re: EHIC ( European Health Insurance Card )

I think you are right. However with the UK pensioners Insurance via KVG, I understand that we have to pay 10% of bills, but NO ceiling. Which in case of an operation or serious long-term illness with expensive treatment could still be heavy to bear (the £ being so weak at the mo).
