One question about 'Peroid of notice' for unemployment insurance.

Hi all,

I read from an official website: If you lose your job, the first thing you should do is to check whether the terms of the employment contract were complied with, in particular the period of notice. Compliance with the contract by both parties is an important condition of eligibility for unemployment insurance.

Please someone explain what does it mean?
Many thanks!
