Oh dear- the family where you worked should have paid the Insurance for you from day one- it is really terrible that people employ people without Insuring them. If you'd had had an accident or a severe illness- the E111 would NOT have covered you - were you registered with the Gemeinde?? How crazy is that? What job are you doing now? You really need professional advice.

Have you read all the 'stickies' on this site- a lot of information there.

Re: I need help with health insurance

Call Jenny, the 'EF resident insurance expert (see the stickies).
I am sure you should be able to explain that you believed your former employers were paying your Insurance, as per the law. THEY were breaking the law, not you. But I suppose the Insurance will have to be back paid to the beginning of your new job. I am almost sure the Insurance will accept for those payments to be spread over a period of time- especially if you are on a low wage. Don't stress, but seek advice and deal with this asap, as waiting will only make it worse. The sooner sorted, the better. Bonne chance. When did you start your new job?

It would be interesting if your ex employers were requested to back pay for your time with them. Are you still in touch?

Hi,

Don't stress, just get some insurance. Go to http://www.comparis.ch/ and find the best cover for your money. Tell them your relocating to Switzerland or that you've just relocated.

And they take a look at her permit, and then what...... worst bit of advice I've heard for a while.

Yes do stress, you may have a sizeable bill accrued. I would explain the exact position to the gemeinde, as you should have had basic cover from when your permit was issued. Certainly the employer should have been making deductions for you so whether you have recourse against them I don't know enough to say. Be honest with them, and play dumb and hopefully you may get some form of waiver, but don't lie to the authorities as if they find out the merde would be deep, and don't lie to the insurance company as they may cancel the cover in the event of a claim if you lied.... Honesty is the best policy here (no pun intended) I was asked for my permit as ID when I took mine out IIRC, and think that your former employer may be in hotter water than you if they weren't making the appropriate contributions etc.

Good luck

Re: I need help with health insurance

The Au-Pair status is different Papa Goose, it is the responsibility of the employer of an Au-Pair to organise and pay for health Insurance, not via deductions- so they were acting illegally.

Makes me so angry that so many Au-Pairs are employed illegally - working far in excess of legal hours (30 max) in sole charge of young children (illegal and very dangerous), expected to do all the housework (only light housework legal- as a helper), language lessons not provided... and of course without providing them with health Insurance! GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
(and btw not just in Switzerland, same all over - and in the UK and US too).

From what Odile posted, a full explanation to the gemeinde and I'm sure it will work out. If your employer should have provided the cover, then I'm sure they can be make to stump up... I hope so anyway, but good luck

I agree with the previous comment that your employer should be covering that for you from day 1 you start workking for them. I would suggest for you to talk to them and if money is the issue, refer them to this http://www.quotes-center.com/average...alth-insurance. This will give a quotation on how much it will be per month and you can choose what type of coverage you might want. Goodluck!

An an au pair you could have overseas insurance since the position is temporary, moving forward who would have known. Since you have stayed in Switzerland I would get new health insurance from the start of your new job, so backdated for a few months.
