Help! Can't find car insurance!

Hi, I've been looking everywhere for european car insurance with no luck and someone told me englishforum may have some helpful suggestions!

I'm moving to Switzerland with my girlfriend for 6 months to potentially a year and would like to take my uk registered car with us. (I know you can have foreign plates in Switzerland for up to a year)

I've looked at the other threads on here and checked out some of the suggested insurers such as stuart collins, clements and Italsure with so far no luck (I dont think the fact we're both under 25 and Ive had an accident and speeding fine a few years back is helping tho!)

Can anyone please recommend a good expatriate insurer as I'm getting a bit desperate now (not long till we leave!)

Michael

Re: Help! Can't find car insurance!

We went with Zurich Connect insurance and they have been great. Even their website is in English and when you call, you actually are able to talk to someone in English the first time - so far with our health insurance providers it takes at least a couple calls to finally get through to someone who can help Here's the link to the website. We set ours up before our car was in Switzerland (ie before it was registered or with Swiss plates which was one of the problems we had with a couple other places). Not sure on the age thing as sadly we left our under 25 status a while ago.

Good luck!

Hi Michael,

I too was in the same situation a few years back as I live France and moved to US for years of study. I found mine using http://www.quotes-center.com/list-of...ance-companies. Most insurance companies base their premuims on your driving history too, so I think you being enganged in a previous accident and speeding really affected the amount. Goodluck!

Why not still use UK insurance with European cover package?

I believe, from what I have heard, you must be a UK resident for UK car insurance, and the european coverage is normally restricted in the length of time spent abroad.

Re: Help! Can't find car insurance!

If you search on this Forum you will find that getting insurance on a British registered car, while living here, is expensive and definitely a grey area. Insurance companies are famous for taking your money and then finding an escape clause in the rule book, just when you need to make a claim.

With your young age and driving record, you would be better off leaving your UK car in Britain. As you will only be here for a short time it isn't worth the trouble and expense of bringing it here.

When you get here, exchange your GB license for a Swiss one, and you can use http://www.mobility.ch/en/pub/index.cfm at the weekends, and public transport for daily commuting. It will be cheaper if you buy a monthly season ticket for the town where you live, and far less hassle.
