Do I need health insurance? Or can I use EHIC

Hi, I am moving to Switzerland for 6 months in a few days time

Can anyone tell me if I'm right in thinking I do not need health insurance for the first 3 months and that I can rely on my European Health Insurance Card?

After the 3 months does it become compulsory for me to get Swiss health insurance or can I register my EHIC as a form of health insurance instead?

I have heard that even if you dont get the health insurance right away they will date it back to the day you enter the country anyway...?

Hello!

Your EHIC will cover you for the first three months but then yes it is compulsary for you to obtain health insurance im afraid. And yes they can back date your date of registration, but not the date you entered the country.

This is my understanding and experience of the situation anyway! I hope i've helped in some way!!

Good luck with your move and i hope you enjoy your time here!

Health insurance is compulsory from the day you start living in this country.

Day you start living = day you register at the local council.

The EHIC is only for tourist emergences. When you register your health insurance will be back dated to the day you arrived here. Try and arrive at the beginning of the month, as they back date in whole complete months!
