Re: Giving birth in the US - covered by Swiss health insurance?

Furthermore, basic Swiss health care insurance will only pay up to what equivalent treatment would have cost in Switzerland. The US is one of the few countries in the world where health care is even more expensive than that in Switzerland.

Just to underscore this point...

Thank the gods that the highest quality medical care was available, but do not underestimate the expense. A complicated delivery, a premature birth will likely be far more expensive in the US than in other countries. Make sure you fully understand your insurance coverage, especially the fine print.
I am not sure - there was a thread on here for someone wanting to know what costs for birth in Germany, Switzerland and France are and I was shocked to see that many here in Switzerland cost over 10K for a regular non-complicated birth. I think mine in the states were all at the $3000 range for private rooms.

After re-reading the thread I am confused - is the OP moving to the US or does she just want to quit her job here in CH and travel to the US to have her child there? If they are moving to the States the question makes a little more sense, I didn't read it that way the first time. We took out extra world wide health coverage but I am pretty sure it only covers emergencies that come up while traveling, and not a planned birth. So, I guess a few more details are needed...I personally would put off a move until after a birth - in 2009 I had baby #3 at the end of May and we moved to Germany 3 months later. Granted, all options involved much stress, but for me having the baby where I was already "settled" and comfortable was important.

Re: Giving birth in the US - covered by Swiss health insurance?

Hi! I happened to see this thread. A few years ago we were in a similar situation and I want to write out what happened for us because it was a very confusing / stressful time. At first my Swiss insurance company said no, that only emergencies internationally are covered and a planned delivery was not an emergency.

Then once they understood the reason the delivery back home was for passport issues ("ius soli") they DID cover the cost of the delivery outside of Switzerland! There are relevant legal grounds. I have no idea what this means but this was quoted: KVV Artikel 36 Absatz 3.

Main advice I can give - make sure your Swiss insurance company gives you any guarantee in writing.

Check also the airline regulations and make sure you fly earlier. You may want to carry a letter just in case from your doctor approving travel. Don't forget your compression stockings. Ensure your baby has medical insurance in place before you bring the baby back. Certain planes have baby cots on board but you must advise the airline in advance to try and get those seats. Car seats regulation stickers between Europe and N. America are different so don't buy your carseat in the US expecting it is accepted in Europe (we just borrowed one while back home).

These were all the things we wish we had known earlier, so we hope this helps others.

All the best!

Interesting. I learn something new every day.
