What insurance, given that I am leaving CH for travels?

Hello,

I am in the need for an insurance, one which would cover basically everything except my home.

I am leaving CH for a long trip (6 months in Asia) and I have de-registered at the Stadthaus (I had to do it, my L permit was running out). So, I guess I am not officially resident here any more (problem is that I am not resident in Italy - my home country - either...).

I am quitting my health insurance with Swisscare (also because I am not eligible any more) and I need a good insurance which would cover:

- medical expenses (emergencies would be enough I guess)
- travel problems (send me home if my mum gets sick, or send my body home if I die on the way, lost luggage...)
- 24h assistance

Can you recommend something? Best would be something for 6 months only.

Any thoughts on my current status when residence is concerned?

Thanks!

Re: What insurance, given that I am leaving CH for travels?

Hi there,

Well, as you said, you are no longer eligible for Swiss health insurance as you're no longer a resident.

I think the main problem is that you'll have to have an address somewhere in order to get some insurance. I doubt that anyone (in either Switzerland or Italy) would insure you without having a home address somewhere?

I think that would be the first thing to look at.
Then once you have a home address, you can look for some insurance.

Perhaps you could use the address of a family member in Italy? (it's always more difficult in Switzerland due to the strict regulations at the commune/population office).

Hope this helps and have fun in Asia!

Re: What insurance, given that I am leaving CH for travels?

Thanks Jenny for your thoughts.

I am now contacting insurance companies directly (columbus and travelnomads - but I prefer the former), asking about the issue you raise.

Thing is that I can't have my residence set back to Italy without spending some time there (the police has to come to your house to make sure you live there - it might take days before they show up).

After all I keep my flat and all the rest here in Zurich, as I will come back for work (though I do not have a contract signed yet), so I hope they won't refuse a claim before I de-registered (they told me I had to - maybe I shouldn't have said anything) at the town all...

In fact, here's what columbus direct wrote me about it, so I am fine:

"To be eligible for a policy under Swiss residency, you must be able to proof that you have been residing in Switzerland continuously for at least the last three months. In the event of a claim you will be asked to proof by bank statements/utility bills that you are permanently or temporarily living in Switzerland for more than 3 months."
