Moved out of apartment - use of liability insurance

Hi all

I just joined the forum after using it for some while finding some much useful information.

And now I think it is my turn to give a little back - I tried searching and only found one thread about using the Haftpflichtversicherung when moving out of a rented apartment.

So the story in short:

We have just moved out of a lovely apartment in favour of another lovely apartment but were a bit nervous for the inspection with the landlord as our children had been quite rough to several walls and the wooden floor (not intentionally as they are only 2 and 4, but by different accidents - they are after all boys ).

The inspection went actually quite ok but we ended up with a bill of just below 3000 CHF for the damages made to the walls and floor.

However I had heard "rumours" about using the insurance to cover the costs.

So I took a bunch of pictures and e-mailed them off to our insurance together with a short description.

And after a very short procedure we were paid out the full amount minus our deductible of 200 CHF!!

Besides the pictures the insurance only needed the final settlement for the Mieterkautionskonto and the Ausgabeprotokol.

So a very nice experience and what I dreaded could cost us a fortune was not so bad after all.

Have a lovely 1. August!

KR

Claus

Re: Moved out of apartment - use of Haftpflichtver

I am wondering how long it takes the leaser to send out the bill of what to fix. We are leaving Switzerland right after the handover of the house and curious how we can claim the house insurance. Thank you very much.

Re: Moved out of apartment - use of Haftpflichtver

Well as we knew the walls needed work both we and the houselord had asked a painter to come buy the same day as the handover.

So we had two offers a couple of days later.

Regarding the floor we made a pauschal (x CHF pr room which needed repair) so that amount was known right away.

The final overview of the total costs where sent to us from the landlord just a couple of days later. This is the document we needed to sign along with the termination papers for the Mieterkautionskonto. So all in all I guess it took no more than a week. And we had alerted the insurance company two days after the handover.

I guess it depends on how fast your landlord is...?

But in regards to what needs to be fixed this you will know at the end of the handover as you together fill and sign the ausgabeprotokol.

Re: Moved out of apartment - use of Haftpflichtver

Thanks DerDane. I'm in a similar situation as you - I have kids who have left their marks on the walls and the floor, and I've been wondering whether insurance cover such cases. Sounds like they do!

I can relax and stop yelling at the kids now haha.

Re: Moved out of apartment - use of Haftpflichtver

Maybe someone can translate Haftpflichtver to English so everyone know which insurance this. Is this the civil responsibility insurance? Some sort of renting insurance? It's not house contents insurance, that I know.

I think it is:

DE Haftpflichtversicherung
FR Assurance responsabilité civile
EN Liability Insurance

Many threads when keyword(s) are searched upon.

Am I the only one with no Hausrat Versicherung?

Re: Moved out of apartment - use of Haftpflichtver

I don't have a definition, but maybe the following analogy will help...

When I moved here, someone told me that "Haftpflichtversicherung" would cover me if say a flower pot fell off my balcony and hit a passer by on the head.
Since then, I've always viewed it as some kind of private indemnity insurance.

I like this analogy - it's always stuck in my head, like being hit by a flower pot I suppose :-)

Ah. Ok, that's "responsabilité civile" in French. I didn't know they covered apartment damage.
