New to Switzerland, health insurance?

I am moving to Switzerland in September and had a question about health insurance.

I am a swiss citizen, but will be travelling through Europe for a few weeks before I arrive in Switzerland. Therefore, I will be in Europe with travel insurance from Australia.

I arrive in Switzerland in early September, but my travel insurance will last until the end of September. Therefore, can I just remain on my travel insurance instead of having to get swiss health insurance which is actually more expensive? If so, I could even extend my travel insurance by another few months, as it would be cheaper than paying for health insurance in Switzerland.

I also heard that you are automatically covered for Swiss health insurance from the day you register to live in Switzerland? If this is true, wouldn't that mean you'd have to back pay them since that date? For example, if I arrived in Switzerland on the 1st of September (and registered), but didn't take out health insurance until the 1st of October, would that mean I'd be covered by Swiss health insurance for the whole month of September, but then have to back pay them for that month?

Once registered as a swiss resident you are required to have swiss health insurance. You have three months to get it sorted, if not they choose it for you, and it will likely not be the cheapest. They will back date the insurance to your arrival date and send you the bill for the insurance since your date of arrival.

So are you still automatically covered between the time you register and the time you get health insurance? eg, if I registered on the 1st September and got health insurance on the 1st of October, would I be covered before I've paid anything?

So if something happens in the month of September (before i've taken out health insurance), i'll be covered - correct?

Re: New to Switzerland, health insurance?

Hi,
When you take up residency you have to sign up with a health insurance company. The premiums depend on the insurance package and location where you live. This link may be helpful:

www.comparis.ch (Topic Health Insurance)

Also check with your employer in Switzerland as he might offer contribution to a collective health and accident insurance plan.

You travel insurance coveres you until end of September. So I would assume that you are fully covered up to that date.

Yes, for basic insurance as legally mandated.

So in that case it is a waste to have travel insurance until the end of September, if i'll already be covered by swiss health insurance? Perhaps I can see if I can shorten my travel insurance and get a refund.

Your travel insurance will not cover you once your resident in CH.
