Car Insurance Help

I will be moving to Geneva in about 4 weeks time, from the USA, I am a British citizen. I will live in Geneva until about Xmas when hopefully we will move to France and become frontaliers (Usual Geneva too expensive and I want a garden forthe kids to play in, also a garage for my bile and car). I have a Jag XKR that I am shipping , probably to France, does anyone know how I can insure my car in France until I get the required Carte Grise and French plates? The same goes for my bike (Suzuki Hayabusa). Any good companies out there?

Re: Car Insurance Help

In most European countries you can't insure a car if you don't live there. When you arrive in France you import your car, get it tested, and then insure and tax it.

Is it really worth all the cost to insure a fairly ordinary vehicle? You can buy them here, on the road.

In France having an address of a second home is fine. They don't care if you have a 'foreign' license.

Re: Car Insurance Help

Just insure it in the UK until you import it.

LV do European cover with upto 180 days per trip.

Re: Car Insurance Help

Thanks guys, the reason I am shipping the car and the bike is that I already own them, the car on the link you shared was 20K Euros more than I paid for mine a year ago. We are relocating permanently for my work in Geneva but as I said expect we will be living on the French side of the border (more bang for your buck than in the Geneva property market?).

So in conclusion we will be resident in France by late this year or early next year, I hope, but I understand I need liability insurance to pick the car up from the customs area and drive it to my home when it will be on US plates

Re: Car Insurance Help

Sorry forgot to mention I am moving from Houston Texas to Geneva, so car is a US spec model...which should be easier for the paperwork...or maybe not...

This is not as simple as it might appear.... You would either have to import directly into France or import here and then export again... If you want to pm me your contact details I can gladly give you options and ideas. Timing is key on these types of issues....

I'm afraid this is some of the worst advise on such a matter, not to mention if he took a cover with a standard company to do such it would be illegal and in the event of loss he would face more headache than them not just paying out...He is not a UK resident...

Re: Car Insurance Help

Hi Tarragon, I urge you to look on this Forum at posts describing the problems people have had with importing and exporting personal cars. It is time consuming, frustrating and sometimes not cheap. At the end most importees feel it would have been better to sell there and buy here.

As you are going to France, you can easily live in Geneva without your own car, and in December you can buy a car in France.

In Switzerland we have a car sharing scheme, take a look: you pay a membership fee and then extra for the time and kilometers,
