Car insurance for French registered car

Hi everyone,
I moved to Fribourg from France back in July and brought my 12 year old French registered car with me. The French insurance is still good for a year, but just out of curiosity, I called an insurer here in Switzerland and he said that it would cost me 900 CHF to insure my car with liability coverage only. I thought the guy must have been smoking something....

So has anyone gone through something like this before? I still have my French driver's license, and I understand that I have 1 year to register the car in Switzerland.

Should I keep my existing French insurance (which does cover Switzerland), or should I get Swiss insurance? Should I register the car in Switzerland and then get insurance?.... what is the average price for liability car insurance? I'm 37 years old, and have been driving since I was 17 with no accidents.

I was paying around 470 Euros per year for car insurance in France, so it couldn't be that different in Switzerland....I hope....

Re: Car insurance for French registered car

I believe you can only get insurance for a car in the country it is registered in. So when French registered, French insurance, when Registered in Switzerland, Switzerland Insurance.

Hi jjrb37,

That sounds a bit too stiff tbh. I think it also comes down to how old you are, Nationality etc for the insurance companies to set the premium.

Did you try comparis.ch for a second opinion? This site will give you an indication on what it will cost you.

For instance, I have checked up on a Porsche 996 3.6L (Swiss Number plates) and filling in my criteria I could get one year insurance (3rd part only) starting at around CHF 520

You will only get TPL quotes in this region with full no claims, age and nationality on your side and full discount most likely without gross negligence or bonus protection from any of the big reputable companies....

To the OP: yes insurance here is higher than France or other places as the parts replacement cost, labour rates and the cost of any car you're going to hit into are far higher.

ooo! it's always posting after you Frank with a salient number, this is post 959 LOL

Ah, the 959... A product of the mid 80's... Brings tears to my eyes

Oh, and jjrb37 you maybe want to have a talk to my dear friend saint7uk as he knows a thing or two when it comes to car insurance... I know I will when I get my 996 (or rather just before)
