When are 2013 Health Insurance premiums due to be announced.

Hi Guys,

The title says it all. I need to register with a health insurer by October 1st and I am waiting for 2013 premiums to be announced before I choose.

Anyone know how long I have to wait?

Best regards

Steve

That's a different question all together. When the new premiums are announced, go to comparis.ch and work out which one's best for you, then apply for it. Depending on the company they may deal with the cancelling of the old one for you... or comparis and others provide standard cancellation letters. You have till 31st of December to do this.

I'm afraid this is wrong; if there is no increase of premium then you have to give 3 months written notice and if the policy goes up only one thus they have to receive it by end of September or end of November accordingly.....

Comparis is a good tool but it is not transparent or independent.

Re: When are 2013 Health Insurance premiums due to be announced.

It's a bit more complicated than that. For the obligatory part of the health insurance (LAMAL), you have until 30th November to cancel your current insurance. For the non-obligatory part, you generally have to give 3 months notice, i.e. 30 September.
It is possible, but not generally recommended, to have the obligatory and non-obligatory insurance held by different companies. Not recommended as if you have disagreements, if you're with one company, they will have to sort out the issues internally.

Its only until the end of November if the policy increases, which the basic usually does and that's why that date stands.. If it didn't it would be 3 months, it is not different from most other Swiss contracts...

If one wished to change it is worth looking at it now as it is important to see if the new company will grant the supplementary before canceling the old...

These guys list 2013 premiums as and when they are announced although bear in mind that they have to be approved by some Government Dept or other before they are official.

And thanks to all those who replied and welcomed me aboard..

Re: When are 2013 Health Insurance premiums due to be announced.

The new LAMal/KVG premiums are generally out on the first Monday in October.

This year this happens to be the 1st of October so I'm hoping we'll have them on this day.

You have until the 30th of November (every year) to cancel your basic health insurance for the 31st of December of the current year.

There are 3 conditions which you must respect in order to cancel your basic health insurance :

- you need to send them a letter by the 30th of November
- you need to have a new company to go with as of the 1st of January
- you need to be up to date with your premiums

You have until the end of the year to choose a new company though the majority of people tend to cancel the old one and sign up to the new one around the same time.

Hope this helps

Re: When are 2013 Health Insurance premiums due to be announced.

Ok, I've just been reading the confusion over the 3 months notice business....

Here's how it actually and technically works (get ready!) ....

You can cancel your basic health insurance twice a year - for the 30th of June or for the 31st of December.

You can only cancel for the 30th of June if you have an "ordinary" deductible - 300CHF for adults, 0CHF for children - and NO alternative method (e.g. TelMed, GP method etc.)

In both cases, you have to give 3 months notice.
i.e. before the 30th of March or the 30th of September, respectively.

However....

If your insurance company send you a notification of premiums after this deadline, you are allowed to cancel it one month later.

As, by law, every single insurance company has to inform you of your new premium for the following calendar year before the end of October, you then have one month to decide if you want to stay with them or not (i.e. up to and including the 30th of November).

As you have been issued with a new notification of premiums, you can therefore cancel it whether your premiums have increased, decreased or indeed stayed the same.

Hope this clarifies the issue!

Last point - as I've said many, many times, Comparis does not list all insurance companies (it only lists the ones that pay/sponsor them).
You are always better off looking on www.priminfo.ch as this is a government led website and therefore has no bias.

The premiums are up on comparis.ch now. I'm not sure if everyone has filed their premiums.

Thanks Jenny, was unaware of or had forgotten this point.

We have supplementary and mandatory from the same provider. They are not the cheapest for the mandatory, but the overall package was OK price-wise. Will be interesting to compare 2013 quotes for the mandatory for us. I'm happy with our insurer, so will look closely at potential saving before deciding if it's worth moving (supplementary is for a min 3 years, so we have another 2 years to run; I know it's an advantage to have both supplementary and mandatory from the same provider, but if there are big savings to be made, might try a different provider for mandatory and see how that goes...).

Yes, I sometimes think it doesn't matter paying a bit extra for a company that you're happy with and who are good with reimbursements etc.
It depends on the difference in price really and up to the individual whether they think it's worth it or not.
