Swisscare - eligible even after 6 years stay in VD?

Hey all,

so me (PhD student until early 2013) and my husband (parttime Postdoc/Researcher at private company) want to switch our basic health insurance from CSS Studentcare to Swisscare, since our premiums with Studentcare will be drastically increasing due to new age group.

So far, Swisscare seems to be the best option, BUT:
On their website it is mentioned that one is eligible for their FSS Plan up to 6 years of stay in Switzerland. So, we moved to VD in 2008 and plan to stay here for a while, so the 6 years would be over in fall 2014. I wrote an e-mail to Swisscare to ask whether a contract based on the FSS plan would be automatically terminated once the 6 years-limit reached, and the reply was a bit cryptic, saying
"Yes, 6 years is the regulation by the authorities. You have to inform us once this limit is reached."

I wonder whether anybody here knows about such a 6-year rule, and whether it only applies to Swisscare or to any other health plan for foreigners (i.e. somebody who is exempted from "regular" care, while having CSS Studentcare, Tradiconsult or the likes). I could unfortunately not find any information in the KVG/LaMal, neither on the websites of the insurances, nor the authorities (in our case, www.vd.ch/occ).

Any help would be much appreciated.

It's basically a case of you have been subsidised by the rest of us for 6 years, if you want to carry on being a student for thats your choice, but you can start contributing in full to health insurance.

You might want to read through this thread, times are changing. For full time students, likely ok, but for researchers, others will need full CH insurance.

Cheap insurance for researchers and academic staff coming to an end soon.

Ok, so me being the doofus and having the full insurance policy despite of being a PhD student probably made up for those OP's 6 years of subsidized insurance...
It's ayit. We don't pay people's subsidies, anyways.

It doesn't seem very cryptic to me...it states it pretty clearly that yes, the limit is 6 years and you need to let them know when that is...

We do pay the subsidies as our premiums are higher than they need to be to cover the students who don't pay full rate.

Re: Swisscare - eligible even after 6 years stay in VD?

Good evening

Yes the limit of being able to be exempted is 2 * three years. The canton will no longer prolong your exemption after that period.

And btw - researchers are no longer going to be exempt in the forseeable future. BUT there are no such plans for PHD Students - that is still being evaluated.

Regards

Carolina
