Surgery cost - Canton differences being charged

For Basic insurance, we have the coverage for all of Switzerland. I had thought that would mean that we would be covered for medical costs no matter what canton. With a very specialized back surgery, we have chosen to go to the Schweizer Paraplegiker Zentrum in Kanton Luzern and have just received the estimated costs and they have included the difference in costs from the Zurich canton (where we reside) to the Kt. Luzern costs as something we should be paying.

Is this normal? Or should we be calling and questioning this? They are covering the vast majority of it but the amount indicated is still a bigger hit to the account than we expected especially when we first contacted the insurance company and they said it would be covered...

If you have only basic, no supplimentary, you can still choose to have treatment in another canton. But yes, if the costs are higher in that other canton, you may be asked to cover that difference.

You may want to check back with your insurer, but this is what I understand to be the case.

Edot is right; phone the insurance and check but usually the higher Canton costs are passed on....

Re: Surgery cost - Canton differences being charged

Found the email I sent to them in April and their response - I asked specifically about extra charges for going to another canton and they said no extra would be charged. I will send that back to them and see what they say but good to know at least this is normal even if I don't like it!
