If Swisscare is not accepted in Aargau, then chances are no other cheap student insurance will be either.

If one is accepted, they all are ; if one isn't accepted, none of them are.

It depends on the canton and not on the insurance company you use.
Has anyone got an up-to-date list of where Swisscare etc. are accepted?

Most of the information I've found is from 2006-7, and some cantons e.g. Aargau have changed their policies in that time.

Re: Very cheap Swiss health insurance for students & researchers

Hey guys! I'm an American student in Ticino canton, does anyone know if these cheap insurance options are available here? I checked the Swisscare website, Ticino isn't on their list. Who might I ask in Ticino about this?

Re: Very cheap Swiss health insurance for students & researchers

Does anyone know whether AON student insurance works as a cheap student insurance?

I've been trying to ask the company but they don't know either...I've had them for over a year in Germany and they have paid all my claims. Doctors here in Germany have even allowed me to be billed and then paid the invoice later once I've been reimbursed.

The website is https://www.aonstudentinsurance.com/ and it is VERY CHEAP. (40 EUR per month?)

Hi Jenny,

are you sure that Aargau Kanton does not accept any of the cheap student insurances?

I m thinking of getting Student Care or Golden Care (80~100CHF/month). Other wise I have to opt for the cheapest one on Comparis.ch, which is about 150 CHF/month...

It's a canton by canton decision. You need to ask the particular canton you plan to use it in.

Yeah exactly. I tried to order Swisscare online but the droplist does not include Aargau.

Do you know about Student Care/Golden Care in Aargau?

Re: Very cheap Swiss health insurance for students & researchers

I think I wrote it somewhere at the beginning of this or a similar thread,

so apologies if I repeat myself:

As a student or low-earner, ask at the Gemeinde or Canton for some info on students' benefits on health matters.

They pay up to 80% of the monthly fees of your health insurance, so you won't even need a cheap students' insurance.

I asked Aargau kanton authorities, for a list of insurance providers recognized by Aargau. I especially mentioned Student Care and Golden Care. Here is part of their reply via email:

"There is no limit regarding the cantonal health insurance approval, the health insurance companies are regulated by federal law. There is a service website in English language: http://en.comparis.ch/krankenkassen/default.aspx , with you can prove the primes and also inform you about the addresses. Make sure that the insurance contract is concluded by the Health Insurance Act named KVG. "

Seemed that I can go with Student Care....
or not?

That shows that the Canton probably has no idea what Swisscare actually is, and still hasn't realised that Swisscare coverage is fully KVG compliant.

Of course, you can try and get one of these insurances, but given other people's experiences with Aargau's authorities I would expect you will be rejected - despite what they said above.

Perhaps write to them again, point out that you know people have been rejected with this insurance, but that it is fully KVG compliant - see what they say to that.

Re: Very cheap Swiss health insurance for students & researchers

No, Studentcare and all other cheaper student insurances are NOT accepted in AG.

Remember that it is a cantonal decision to accept or not to accept these insurances.

Basically, if your canton will accept one - it will accept all of them.
So if your canton says "no" to Studentcare, it will say no to all of the others too.

Cantons which accept cheaper student insurance :

VD, GE, VS, JU, FR, ZH, TG, SH, BE, LU, BL, BS, ZG, SZ, GR, UR, SG & GL.

Is this something I have to ask the canton without them asking me? I just recently registered at the Gemeinde (I'm an American studying at HSG, I applied for my visa at the embassy in Berlin as I'd been living in Germany and at the Gemeinde I registered my address and followed-up with my Aufenhaltserlaubnis....hope this is somehow relevant). I don't think I ever provided proof of insurance, the Gemeinde didn't ask about health insurance at all.

Anyhow, I have AON Student Insurance...do I need to specifically ask to see if this is acceptable? Would there be a chance that I could have something come after me in the future for not being properly insured if it doesn't fit (like a huge fine or something)? I mean if AON is accepted then why not pay that, it's like 35 EUR a month and they said they would cover me in Switzerland too.

Re: Very cheap Swiss health insurance for students & researchers

Hi everyone. Very helpful thread, thanks for sharing.

I am from the UK and will be interning on a low wage for an organisation in Lausanne for a period over the next 6 months (from October) but it is likely that this will be extended up to 12 months. After 6-12 months, I hope to be employed as a manager at this organisation.

Based on this thread, I thought going for health insurance with SwissCare would be my best bet as an intern. But I just read this on the organisation's website:

3 months and more

Person from EU/EFTA Countries

Foreigners from EU and EFTA countries can provide their EHIC (European health insurance card) and present to the cantonal or municipal authorities as proof of a valid social health care.

If the person is no more eligible for this card in his home country, he can follow the instruction for other countries here under.

----

Can anyone help what this means? Will my EHIC cover any illnesses I may have for 6 months without the need for health insurance?

Re: Very cheap Swiss health insurance for students & researchers

Hi,
I am a new postdoc at PSI and live in the nearby town Brugg which is in Aargau canton. I wanted to have a health insurance from swisscare, but found that swisscare is not available in our canton. The other one is Tradiconsult (I came to know after reading this thread) which is as cheap as swisscare. However, after reading all these post about Tradiconsult, i am not very optimistic about this company. Do any body know about any other alternative company which is as good a swisscare? Or is it worth to go for Tradiconsult? Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Hi Pabi,
As mentioned here : Very cheap Swiss health insurance for students & researchers if Swisscare is not accepted in AG then no other student insurances will be.

Unfortunately, you'll have to get a standard Swiss insurance.

Hope this helps

Never been allowed in Neuchatel either. It was voted recently that cheap insurance deals for researchers and academic staff will come to an end soon- although it will continue for some time for students. The article in my daily paper didn't give a date for the end of such cheap deals, but it is imminent.

Re: Very cheap Swiss health insurance for students & researchers

It seems swisscare's claim agency EUROPÄISCHE Reiseversicherungs AG is quite picky about the medical claim from this year. They refused to reimburse my medical checks which were required by my doctor. After contacting them, they require a letter from my doctor to explain the situation.
I have claimed the same cost during the last few years without problem.

Anyone has the same experience?

Not if you're a foreign student?
If it's for standard insurance, that could very well be about right but it sounds like it's worth shopping around!
