Re: Very cheap Swiss health insurance for students & researchers

I live in Neuchâtel. I am reconciling myself to the fact that I can't get very cheap health insurance.. Does anyone happen to know anything about insurance that covers mental health? I'm having some difficulty wading through the french/german/italian on all the websites.. any information would be great

Re: Very cheap Swiss health insurance for students & researchers

I heard a pretty worrying story about Swisscare the other day. A student friend of mine needed a very expensive (30K) operation rather suddenly. She is a student insured by Swisscare, and her and her fellow had to stump up the cash for the op. Nine months later they are still trying to organise repayment by Swisscare, who have done everything in their power to try to worm out of it. In short, while the policy is cheap, if you need serious medical care you will have a very difficult time getting the money.

Re: Very cheap Swiss health insurance for students

Hi All,

I need to see a Gastro specialist in Zurich. However, I use Swisscare insurance plan. Do I need to pay right there and then for the treatment? How does the Swisscare work in general when seeing a specialist? For instance, in Permanence (near Zurich HB) if you are under Swisscare they ask for payment right then and there. I hope someone can help.

Best.

BH

Contact the doctor or clinic you plan to visit and ask if they bill Swisscare directly. Then contact Swisscare and ask them for the proper procedures that you need to follow. Only these two entities can tell you for certain what will happen. The rest of us can but speculate, and I'd hate for you to rely on us and get shocked with a big bill on the spot later. Feel better soon!

Re: Very cheap Swiss health insurance for students

Thank you so much for your response. I might have to get an endoscopy or X-ray. Does anyone knows how much they cost? I am under Swisscare like I said, and I cannot rely on it completely. I have heard people have bad experiences in terms of their reimbursing us the money. (The post above also refers to this. ) Is Swisscare that bad? I had some blood tests a 2 months ago. Immediately after the bill arrived, I sent to Swisscare. They still did not reimburse me. It has been 1.5 months already.

Re: Very cheap Swiss health insurance for students & researchers

apparently, TradiConsult has become Advisor Swiss Insurance. it looks like there has been a couple of bad and a couple of good experiences with them in this thread. does anyone have up-to-date comments about this insurance? are they valid in zurich?

have a nice week...

Re: Very cheap Swiss health insurance for students & researchers

Hi all,

I am resurrecting this post as I did not find better information on google.

Being a postdoc with the need to have an health insurance in Switzerland, is there any possibility to get a cheaper one only because of my position (say, a normal one costs 250-300, a cheaper 100 CHF /month)?

Many thanks for your answers.

Cheers

ETH lists two insurance companies offering low-cost insurance to students:

https://www.ethz.ch/en/studies/inter...insurance.html

SwissCare website lists post-doc as eligible for their insurance:

https://my.swisscare.com/studentpass_switzerland/forms

Would suggest reviewing Academic Care website too for post-doc eligibility.

Afaik, this depends on the salary. The Cantonal department on health insurance has a cut-off that determines eligibility for insurances such as Swisscare (possibly if you earn less than 3k per month).

FloridaJoe, what is your residential status? I know you came over to be with your girlfriend, but is she applying for a concubine permit for you? Are you here as a student? Because those are your only two options for staying here long term. If neither of these apply then you can't live here for more than 90 days and won't need Swiss health insurance.

If either of the above is the case then for option one the answer on Swisscare is no, if option two then the answer is maybe yes. They specialise in student health insurance, but it's not accepted in all the cantons so you'd need to check if Vaud accepts it or not. If you're not a student you can't get insurance with them.

Hello and thank you! yes it is the concubine permit i have applied for, i have been here for over 4 months my application is in progress and i am legally allowed in Switzerland. I have had the Canton send me everything, We met with family in greece and didnt want any trouble leaving or entering the Country, all went well. I just received a letter Thursday stating i need to get my insurance and im not a student. looked into other companys other than swisscare, a little too expensive but i see people here who have found insurance for 80$ a month which would be ideal for now.

The problem is that you aren't a student. Swisscare and co. only provide insurance for foreign students who are here on a short-term basis.
It is not available to Swiss students nor to foreigners who are not students.
Of course we'd all like to be paying 80CHF a month but unfortunately, we have to all take the normal Swiss insurance which is relatively expensive, yes.

Re: Very cheap Swiss health insurance for students & researchers

Well, you're unlikely to get it anywhere near that price methinks. Have a look using www.comparis.ch to find the best deal. Remember that if you go for the highest franchise (2,500) then the premiums will be lower, BUT you have to pay that first 2,500 for any medical bills before the insurance kicks into action. If you go for a lower one then the premiums are going to be higher. It's swings and roundabouts really. If you're healthy and aren't likely to need to see a doctor or go to hospital then the 2,500 may be best, but if you have or may develop a serious condition then a lower franchise would probably be better as the insurance will kick in faster. Also will depend on whether you go for the standard model or one of the others which can also lower the premiums.
