Supplementry Health insurance

Hi all,

New in Switzerland and as part of relocation we have an agent who is supposed to help us with obtaining health insurance. Firstly he only spoke about Assura until we asked about others and he reluctantly got one other quote for us. On the basis that all basic health insurance is the same the price seems to be the only difference we need to look at. Right? Well apart from the minor detail that I understand we pretty much do the admin for Assura and that is why they are cheaper. The real mind field for us though is the supplementary health cover. As we live in Switzerland we are obviously looking forward to exploring neighbouring countries so travel insurance is a need. Then there is this extra for being insured outside your canton business. Well I suppose we will be exploring the rest of Switzerland too. Not sure I fully get this bit though. And then there are even more extras. The main problem is understanding the website that are only in the official languages and I can't rely on google translate for this completely. The agent who was supposed to help us has me concerned as he gave us a policy to sign for the extras (travel and cover in Switzerland) which turned out to be for a 5 year duration!!! He never mentioned this and now I don't trust him.

In general we are all in good health. My husband and I do sometimes get the odd back pain for which we have visited osteopaths and physiotherapists for and we have an 18month old son and one on the way due in June (pre-existing condition I am told, basic only for me).

So how do we navigate the lost in translation minefield for the supplementary cover and is a 5 year contract the norm???

Thanks for you help and advise. I am pulling my hair out and don't want to be ripped off.

Charlene
