1 month without health insurance - possible?

Dear EF community,

I have a tricky situation and I hope someone knows what to do:

I started working as an intern and I made a contract with Swisscare for the time frame: 1. November 2012 - 30. June 2013 (original duration of my internship).

I had to pay the fee quarterly so I paid Nov-Jan and Feb-Apr already.

However at the end of March I received an unlimited contract from my company (even before the end of my internship). My unlimited contract started on 1. April 2013.

I contacted the respected office for health insurance (I think Amt für Sozialbeiträge) and they told me that I need to join a local insurance company from now on. I told them that I already paid Swisscare for April, so is it possible to join the new insurance company from May?! They said if the new insurance doesn't mind, then it's ok.

So I joined KPT on 1. May. In order to cancel my Swisscare insurance I had to send my new working contract as a proof, that I am not eligible for Swisscare insurance anymore.

This is what they replied:

"You are not eligible for SWISSCARE if you start a normal job.

So we have to cancel your insurance from 01.04.2013.

Could you please contact the new insurance firm to change the starting date from 01.04.2013?

Thank you for your comprehension."

Now what should I do?? I don't want to pay double fee for April, especially that I did not go to the doctor or used any health services...

Any advice? :-)

Thanks and cheers,
Vixy

Re: 1 month without health insurance - possible?

Maybe but there is a good chance the answer is no. Most people who come here discover that insurance is compulsory to start on thedate of their permit commencement even if they dont arrive until a number of weeks later.

If its only a month of insurance this will,be one of the smaller costs you have to contend with probably easier to take a pragmatic approach

Re: 1 month without health insurance - possible?

Maybe if you show proof of the new insurance, you could claim the April 'fee' back from 'Swisscare' - especially as they cancelled the cover from 1st April onwards, not you.

Unfortunately proof isn't any good in Switzerland - learnt through experience - they don't use their heads, they go by the books. If it says it, then you owe it.... especially with insurance Cies.

Re: 1 month without health insurance - possible?

Dear Vixy,

It depends on where you go. You should be able to start your new insurance whenever you want it doesn´t even have to be on the 1st day of the month. For example I moved to Switzerland last year in April but I didnt start a contract with an insurance till June and I could agree with my insurance company when exactly I wanted to start the contract. If the new insurance company its not flexible you can try another one. In Switzerland you are free to choose the insurance that is more convenient to you. I hope this helps, regards, Zahira

Hi Vixy

Don't bother with them. Take the insurance with KPT from 1st May 2013. Leave it with Swisscare and don't waste time. Or were you ill in April 2013? Make sure that with KPT only illness is insured since you're fully insured againgst all accidents (business and leasure) via your employer on a mandatory basis (if you work more than 8 hours a week).

Regards
Stefan

Re: 1 month without health insurance - possible?

I fail to see a problem. You've got one imsurance that's now been cancelled for two months, and one that was valid from a month ago - you're fine, you're insured, what's the problem?

Ace1: I wasn't insured in April.

Hunter66: Thanks you very much, I did exactly what you suggested. KPT said if I wasn't seeing the doctor in April, they don't bother now with the administration. :-)

Thank you all for the valuable advices!

Cheers,
Vixy

Re: 1 month without health insurance - possible?

I had similar issues i.e. I was no more eligible for SwissCare.

So I had to take new local insurance with starting date backed to 8 months (in my case). I sent my new insurance to the SwissCare and they paid me back the money for the last 8 months. It's really easy. If you have claimed something from SwissCare during that period it might take sometime for the transfer of claim from one insurance company to another, otherwise just relax.

When I back dated my insurance, the agent even gave me the most basic insurance for 2012. And only paid my supplementary insurance (optional) from 2013.

Oh yeah there is no way to cheat, health insurance is obligatory and if they catch you, you might land in trouble ;-).

Well Swiss administration does. health insurance are obligatory so they can easily catch it during permit renewal. I would not risk trouble with swiss bureaucracy for few hundreds.

I'm sure they _could_ if they really wanted to, but will they? No.

Anyway, it's a moot point, as they've now told her that they're not bothered.
For a longer period I could imagine they might be, although I recall that when I first came here I wasn't fully aware of things and didn't actually get any health insurance until I'd been here for about a year and a half. No-one seemed to notice until that point, when my employer started pestering me for a copy of the certificate.
