| | Does My Household and private liability insurance cover Iphone/Bicycle damage?
Hello,
I accidentally broke my iPhone screen twice! (and paid the apple store 160fr each time to get a replacement), as i was leaving the app store yesterday i overheard someone saying that this is covered in your household insurance? can anyone confirm? i have my Household and private liability insurance with Zurich Insurance.
Also along the same lines, while cycling yesterday my inner tube exploded (and ripped the actual tyre) - i'm alive, but i would like to know if this is covered as well. |

Liability insurance is just that - for third party liability, not personal damages and losses.
I've never heard of anyone claiming on insurance for a puncture on a bike - unless it caused the bike to be further damaged.
You can buy a new tire and tube for about 30chufs and change it yourself in 5-10 mins ...... less than your excess.

Depends what surplus you have on your policy. Mine is 200.-, so it wouldn't be worth it.
Worth shopping around for iPhone screen repairs btw, my daughter has had to replace hers twice now , both times costing < 100.-.
Edit: SOBEIT beat me to it |

I buy such things in France usually, and tyres start from as little as 10 Euros or less, e.g. http://www.decathlon.fr/F-10941-pneus, http://ch.cherchons.com/dossier/pneu-de-velo.html.

Iv'e been cycling for years and never had to think about replacing a tyre- i had thought i would be paying 200fr or so for one in Schweitz! thanks for the links... i guess i can start shopping online for the ingredients to get myself back and cycling.
Although i'm wondering what it will cost to get a tire and tube in Switzerland, because teh cash i will spend on Trains until the tire/tubes are delivered might be far more than a Swiss fix.

Update! inner tube and tires cost 49fr from the bike shop near Tunnelstrase in Central Zurich! so i got those. they charge an extra 10 fr to fix it.
thought this wise since i will be spending about 33fr for transport for a week while waiting for delivery of my tires and tubes
Just in case i might buy some spares online since they are a lot cheaper. i already have spare inner tubes for my other bike, but thinking maybe 2 spare tires are probably wise.
Herd back from my insurance and the iPhone is covered in my Houshold insurance! Sent a receipt waiting for a reply- i don't have the terms&C in English (and not sure the German one specifies an excess for phone repairs) but i hope there inst one! (or at least significantly less than what i paid Apple store for it!)

My excess was 250. handling a claim is time (read money) intensive so insurance companies discourage small claims by having an excess
We use Axa and their customer service is incredibly good

Only if you're a serious racer or MTBer would this be normal practice - for a commuter it's really not worth the effort, as you can get a replacement in minutes at any cycle shop and failure is very rare. I did replace the ones on my racer/road bike recently, but they were at least 15 years old and literally perishing, such that one had given me 3 punctures on one journey. I did have a fold-up spare, but on that daya I wasn't carrying it
Incidentally, I looked in a Jumbo the other day, and they had standard city-type tyres from as little as 10chf up to 30 or so.

If anyone is interested in an update, by bike got stolen this morning - and my insurance doesn't cover it (it was stolen outside my house) - so apparently not covered by Household ins.
I guess i gotta look for a new bike now- part of me feels happy( as i have a reason to get a new one) the other half of me feels sad cause i feel hundreds of francs are thrown away!!
this mustv'e been a professional thief of some sort because two broken bike locks were on the floor the same day! |

Just an FYI when you buy your new bike: ask your insurer about a policy that would cover bike theft. Like yours, our standard HH insurance doesn't cover OH's bikes so he has a special rider adding coverage for replacement in case of damage or theft. IIRC the rider wasn't all that expensive when you consider the cost of the bikes.
