Where to get Renters insurance / personal liability insurance

Hi, I am new to Switzerland and will move from temporary accomodation into my flat in Basel next month. The apartment lease recommends that I get liability insurance to cover me for break-in, theft, damage to glass etc.

More importantly, I would like to sign-up for personal liability insurance to cover me if I hit someone while riding the bicycle etc.

I had such a combined renters/personal liability insurance (HSBC Homesurance) before I moved to Switzerland and it cost me the equivalent of CHF30/month.

I am banking with UBS but their web site does suggests that this is not a service they offer; previously I did banking and insurance both with HSBC.

What companies have others on this forum used to insure for household goods and personal liabilty? What are your experiences re: their customer service?

I looked up this on www.comparis.ch. After careful comparison, just the home insurance by the way, I chose Visana. I assume they also have the personal liability. For a 4 bedroom house it was 137 a year and the part you have to pay per claim is lower than with other companies. Check out the above site.

Can you get personal liability insurance that is not linked to your address. I'm in the same boat as Axelino in that I need it for my 3 month temp accomodation.

Liability insurance is a must have. Ruinous otherwise.

But it does not cover bicycle accidents. That requires a valid sticker on the bicycle. Costs about CHF 6 p.a. and is valid from May to May (cycling season).

Re: Where to get Renters insurance / personal liability insurance

I have the combined package at Winterthur, and until now I've been very happy with them. Not too expensive, but good customer service and coverage. My 2-yr old bike got stolen, and they refunded everything (incl. accessoires + vignette) within 1 week, without asking questions.

The 'selbstbehalt' is 200chf, but this seems to be quite common.

I did that too and was also working with an insurance broker- when he saw my "Comparis" quotes, he was able to offer me a better rate with the same company that I had chosen using Comparis!
