Can Supplemental Health Insurance "drop" you?

Hello,

I have been buying supplemental health insurance from progres/helsana for ten years in addition to my basic insurance.

I have a policy which covers many extras such as complementary health, gym membership, checkups, etc.

I use many of the benefits of the supplemental health insurance and have often been submitting big, yet legitimate claims under the policy.

So much so that they amount I get back is more than the annual amount I pay.

I wonder if the supplemental insurance company has any recourse because I am not a profitable client.

Can they "drop" me or not let me renew because I cost them more than they make?

Ultimately, I want to make sure I don't jeopardize my insurance with them because I want the extended hospital and travel benefits for emergencies.

Is there anything they can do to me for filing many claims?

Thanks for any thoughts.

Re: Can Supplemental Health Insurance "drop" you?

AFAIK, it's a 3 to 5 year contract, often auto-renewed. Helsana's T&C state that they reserve the right to not renew the contract as they wish. Of course, for a sizeable claim, they will do some due diligence before processing it. But if it's all legitimate, they will have no option but to pay up.

On deeper thought, the savings are a bit illusionary. The more you spend on healthcare, the more you save with insurance. Everyone in the "system" is linked. You can be happy for getting some cotton pads worth 300 CHF for free, but you could also question the system of convoluted pricing, premiums and franchises.

A health insurer will normally only 'drop' you when you have incorrectly completed the application. If you are part of a family insured with them, they will normally not terminate you, as the other people will 'pay' for your loss. The only challenge will be if you wish to increase your health insurance, which they probably will decline.
Note that if you wish to change to another insurer, they will exclude any treatment you have planned, so better stick with the one you have
