Post-Doc in Neuchatel to do field-work in Africa- is EHIC enough for the Canton?

Hi

My situation is a little unusual so I would like to get advice about the best options for getting through the Canton requirements for Health Insurance

I am a British Post-doc researcher soon to be employed in Neuchatel University for a 12month position, the first 6 months of which I will not be in Switzerland, but doing field-work in Africa. I know the Canton's have requirements for Insurance and that neuchatel does not accept SwissCare. My question is, will EHIC Card be adequate for the residency permit? I am happy to follow up swiss health insurance when I am back in switzerland but there is no point paying for it if the EHIC will do for the red-tape side of things... I would get UK based International insurance but it looks like Neuchatel Canton are unlikley to accept that either (the africa insurance is completely separate to all of this)

any advice greatly appreciated!

thanks

Hi,

we have a thread that probably covers your answer:
Exemption from compulsory health insurance

Depending on your canton (I don't know about Neuchatel) you could get the exemption, but technically your EHIC from the UK won't be really valid after you are living abroad for a while.
Read the other thread for more information, although the case discussed there is mostly the Italian EHIC there are some links in the more recent posts about the UK's EHIC as well.

Will you actually be resident in Neuchatel at all before you move to Africa?
ie will you have accommodation here and a have to register with your local commune?
If you are not going to be living here for the first six months of your contract how will you get a residency permit? You'll need an address here for that.

If you do then it may be a little tricky to avoid the Swiss health insurance obligations. Neuchatel is pretty pernickety about these sorts of things and not really very flexible.

Hi

Many thanks for your comments

Yes, I have to get the Residency permit in order to start the contract but I will just be putting down the university accomodation address while I am away in africa

I have heard that Neuchatel is pretty fussy....I just wondered if I could wait to take the Swiss Insurance plunge when I return, or get a cheaper UK based one...

I will also check out those thread posted. Thanks

A UK insurance won't meet the requirements either. If they did, everyone would be using them.

The best thing to do would be to ask them when you register. If you can prove that you have acceptable medical cover for your stay in Africa and that you won't be living in Neuchatel until you get back from there they might just allow you to wait until you come back and actually take up residency here before starting Swiss medical insurance. I wouldn't hold your breath though. ( I know of cases where it was accepted and others where it was refused so you never know what will happen).

Medea Fleecstealer is absolutely correct, the Neuchatel authorities will not accept a UK based insurance.
