Living in NZ, Swiss Wife, shes travling to Switzerland for 6 weeks. Health Insurance?

We live in New Zealand. My wife is Swiss. She does on qualify for Travel Insurance policies from NZ travel insurance agencies for travel to Switzerland because she does not have residency yet, she only has a NZ work visa. Shes going back to Switzerland for 6 weeks to see her family every year or so, what Health Insurance can she get for her for the 6 weeks she's there.

Thanks for your help!

Why does just having a work visa make a difference? She still lives in NZ. Look at getting a worldwide travel insurance of some kind. Or try your credit card company to see if they offer international travel insurance she can get. Crazy rule really.

Not sure if there are other solutions, but I do know that STA offers Basic travel insurance for those without permanent residency.

Surely if she has a work viasa, and lives in NZ then she is resident. She is not a citizen! Try world nomads for insurance. They insure you which ever country you live in.

Oops, ignore me - appears that this is only for non-permanent residents travelling to NZ, Australia or Pacific and returning to "country of residence" at the end of the trip.

Hmm, strange situation...

But I have an NZ passport and if I return to NZ on holiday, because I am still a citizen then I am entitled to all the healthcare I would be entitled to if I still lived permanently in NZ..... is the reverse true for Switzerland? I guess it's trickier because of the compulsory health insurance requirements....

I've looked at about 9 or 10 different policies with travel insurance companies here. Most only apply if you have permanent residency, a few just say residency. After some research on the immigration NZ site, her work visa is not a residency visa.

Nomads wont work as they don't insure you for your home country.

Sorry for butting in here, but NZ is not usually easy to travel to and from just for the work hours.

If your wife has a work visa for NZ, she will be entitled for residency in the country..therefore being a resident, but not citizen.

Unless I got the wrong end of the stick here, the above should be true..

But she isn't a resident of Switzerland. If she was she'd have health insurance.

You are saying she is a resident of no where, which seems ridiculous! She should either be a resident of Switzerland or New Zealand. Why does she not call her embassy in NZ and see what they suggest?

I do think you're getting confused between resident and citizen.

I'm a British citizen (but not resident). I'm a Swiss resident (as I reside here) but not a citizen.

Perhaps one of your wife's family can get her insurance through their own. It was possible foe me to do that for my mum but going back 10 years.

Thanks, not a confusion about Citizen or Resident. Just a technicality on the VISA she has... its a 1 year work visa... which according to NZ immigration is not a Residency Visa which are 2 years. So yeah, she's officially de-registered as being a resident of Switzerland here at the Swiss Consulate in NZ.

Sounds very random! Is she not entilted to residency if you're married?

Maybe the best would be to register as resident when she arrives in CH, get health insurance for 6 weeks.... And then deregister!

Nope marriage has nothing to do with getting residency in NZ. All you have to do is prove that you have been together for longer then a year, so boy friend girl friend world work. I've been with girl for 11months (got engaged after about 3)... so she could only get work visa not residency becuase of the 1 year limit etc.

Update: After hunting high and low on the internets. I found a Travel Insurance company who will... "provide temporary medical coverage for non-U.S. citizens returning to their home country." Seems legit. http://www.imglobal.com/index.aspx?location=logo
