| | Does the Household Insurance cover the MacBook in my home?
Hi All,
Yesterday night, accidentally my son spilled a cup of water in the table and before a blink of moment, it ran through our Apple Mac book and now that laptop stopped working completely. We took it to apple repair center and they said the chance of bringing it back to life from its death bed looks gloomy.
Now, I am so worried about the cost of repair (already deposited 150 chf and waiting for their exact quote to be mailed in a week time). I do pay Privathaftpflicht and Hausrat premium every year. Does this Hausrat covers my own laptop, and the accident caused by my own son?
I need to wait till Monday to call and check with the insurance company, but before that, I thought of asking our forum members. I got to see this one thread related to my issue, but not clear whether the OP got the insurance claim or not for the iPhone. Does My Household and private liability insurance cover Iphone/Bicycle damage?
Thanks in Advance for all your time and patience to reply my post.

You might be lucky and only the top case will be affected - depending on the model this can be repaired for as little as 300.-.
If on the other hand water has reached the main board then, depending on model and age, it may well be beyond economical repair. In some instances the repair will be more than buying new.
From what you've said in that the laptop is dead then I'd prepare for the worst. Sorry.

Xxactly that happened to one of my macbooks in the UK .. Insurance pay out, no problem.
So when I moved here and took out home insurance I specifically asked for that sort of thing to be covered. I have two young kids so I really wanted .
NO was the answer, this type of insurance does not exist in suisse.. If own kids do it, tough merde. If somebody else does it, liability insurance covers it.
Are you SURE it was not your sons friend who spilled it | The following 3 users would like to thank for this useful post: | |

Now my main concern is, whether the Household Insurance will do some monetary help, if we claim this.

Worst case make sure that if the repair place tell you it's beyond repair, don't let them keep the machine!! At least get the disk back. You'll be able to recover everything fairly easily. (or somebody will if you're not comfortable)

1. How much to repair
2. How much to recover data, if cannot be repaired
and we need to respond back. They told that if the logic and display board is gone, then it is better to buy a new one.
Damn, our warranty expired just in December and I don't know why such things always happen exactly at the end of the warranty period. We didn't care to buy the extended warranty too |

I do not possess one of these devices as I am a Linux snob, however..
Wait until the thing dries out thoroughly
Extract the disk/HDD/SSD whatever, see here - http://www.ifixit.com/Device/Mac
Hook up the disk to a different machine and recover your photographs.
Claim from the insurance (Man at the door with the water pistol / unknown individual in restaurant whatever / cat).

So, seems like a little fabrication needed for insurance claim, though the one single truth is "Laptop crashed"

Did exactly the same to mine last year- dog turned over as I was going to settee and MacBook with cup of coffee- dog turned over, and the whole cup landed on MB. Got in touch with our insurance (Mobilière) who said it was not covered as I had spilt it. If my neighbour's kid had done it, it would be covered- but not by MY insurance, but theirs.
Fortunately mine was a 5 year old model we intended to replace anyhow- but I was pretty miffed. Feel your pain.

You should be lucky as it is your son, and not YOU, who caused the damage. so it should work (next time... I'll ask my very kind neighbour who visits with her 2 little ones every few days... )

From my research on internet for the past few hours, I understood that it won't cover the damage caused by the policy holder and his / her dependents. My Bad.

We are insured with the Mobiliar and they have a supplemental insurance you can take out which covers exactly this kind of accident. You can decide what the limit is and the premium is based on that.
As I said, it is not part of the standard policy but it is an option.
Of course, after the fact that is not much consolation....

Snoopy, may I ask roughly how much the supplemental insurance costs?
I usually take out the AppleCare protection plan, which covers accidents such as the OP describes. But AppleCare costs ca. CHF 400 per devise. I wonder if a supplemental policy to my household insurance might be a better option?

We set our limit at CHF 2'000, but that is variable.
