My kitchen sink faucet broke (pipe inside) and burst in my kitchen

I rented the house 5 months ago. The building is new. Yesterday, when I cooked, I turned the faucet on, the faucet was broken and the water burst everywhere, all over the kitchen (nothing happened before that). I tried to turn off the water but it was unsuccessful. Later, I called the "pompier" and they fixed it. However, I am not sure whether the wooden floor would be damaged or not.

I have two questions about this:
1/ I or the building management company have to be responsible for that damage? (I called the building manager and he told me that my home insurance should pay that).
2/ If I am responsible for paying, can I call our home insurance? Do they accept to pay?

I am a pretty careful woman and I did not do anything wrong to the faucet.

report it to the insurance. They can then discuss with the management.

Except it won't be called the verwaltung in Morges.. Probably 'agence immobilière' or something similar.

I always reported any problems direct to our agency and then they arranged the necessary repairs/replacements as required.

This happened to us in our first week in Switzerland, on an Easter Monday. Fortunately, we were able to turn of the water, and our neighbours got us the emergency plumber.

The landlord's insurance covered it. (They went after the kitchen installer who hadn't secured a pipe properly).

Remember the default setting of any landlord will usually be "you need to pay for it/you need to claim on your insurance". In this case, it's far more likely to be the landlord's responsibility. Make sure any water damage is clearly documented. Our landlord tried to stiff us for carpet cleaning when the visible tide mark was obviously caused by the flood. If a dehumidifier is required to dry the room, that should be paid for out of insurance and the cost of electricity to run it.

As noted, most likely your insurance will talk to the landlord - especially if it needs to come off his insurance!

If in doubt, join and talk to the tenants association. (Mieterverband in German).
