Re: Weird Calls about Optimizing health insurance

You seem annoyed. If so, try to make it a lengthy call. Don't walk off, don't hang up, don't just say "No", but instead keep the conversation going.

Here's why:
They want to sell. In order to do that they need to make as many calls in the shortest possible time. If you say "no" they simply call the next number.

If, however, you keep them on the line you cost them time, and therby money. Do waste as much of their time as you can, and then some. You'll be put on a blacklist fairly quickly (say, after the three or four waste-time-calls), and not receive any more of those - presumably because these cold callers share them with each other.

This can actually be fun:
Try turning things around, take the lead and have HIM/HER answer YOUR questions

The swiss-german K-Tipp recently tested what they call "call blockers" but none really satisfied. Either you need to enter the caller numbers yourself (no automatically updated blacklist, and of course these numbers change often), or the call is put thru and only aborted after ringing twice, or...

Well yes, I am annoyed. Since I'm in the US right now, the call came at 4:45 AM. Not in any condition to be clever.

But what you say actually makes sense. And if I get one when I get back next week and if I'm in mood, I might play with what you suggest.

Re: Weird Calls about Optimizing health insurance

They've been harassing me for weeks, some number from "call center". I have blocked it my phone now.

I was tempted to do the call center rodeo though - play really dumb (shouldn't bee to difficult for me with my limited german skills) and see for how long you can keep the agent on line.

Re: Weird Calls about Optimizing health insurance

Hi everyone,

we also got a call recently from someone suggesting to optimize our health insurance. It was early in the morning, we did not know how to react first, and unfortunately agreed to have an appointment at home in the next few days. Now it seems that we should agreed..

What is the best way to proceed? Should we just ignore them when they come or simply talk to them? Which of these two options has a higher chance of them stopping bothering us?

And, by the way, from where do they know our phone numbers and addresses? Now when I think, they did not even ask about an address, they just said they will come, as soon as we agreed...

Thanks a lot in advance!

what number are they using?

+41435507307?

Swiss Call? http://tel.search.ch/zuerich/quellenstrasse/suisse-call
I can happily say the above number is not health related, just Devere-related.

I would just say "hang on a minute" and put the phone down. Keep a log of how long the call lasts each time you do that....

Thanks for the reply! I will definitely do so if they call again? But what to do if they come in front of the door? (as I did the appointment already.. )

Don't let them in.

They waste every one else's time. Waste some of theirs.

You'll regret it if you do let them in because they can be very persuasive in the hard sell - especially if you are not fluent in the language they are using.

No use, I tried. After all it's not as if we'd inventend the wheel so they must have plenty of experience with that. They wait less than a minute if you just put the receiver down.

As for the salespeople appointment:
It's up to you if you let them in or not. However, considering you're probably not too fluent in german it's probably better to not let them in. If you do let them in you can order to leave any time you like, and call the police if they refuse (ask for his/her card first thing so you have a name) - in this respect your home is your castle indeed.

Re: Weird Calls about Optimizing health insurance

I started getting calls a few days ago on my mobile. I don't speak German well enough to understand everything the guy was saying, but he was calling about health insurance optimization from Bern. When I said I prefer English, he took a while to talk really fast in German (so I wouldn't understand jack s**t) and then slowly asked me which insurer I am using and how much I am paying. I didn't feel comfortable telling him, so first he asked me whether I speak Albanian and then gave the phone to a female colleague who couldn't articulate things better in English, so she gave up, snorted, and hung up. There was a lot of background noise which sounded like a call center.

Full blown scam if you ask me. Beware.

Re: Weird Calls about Optimizing health insurance

In my opinion I dont think its a full blown scam, they just want to make bookings for appointments to health insurance reps which they sell on (reps pay anywhere from 40-60 for appointments) Damn annoying, they call my house nearly everyday, my mobile every second day. I just tell them very quickly not interetested and hang up...might try the time wasting method though, see if that works.

I had a call at work from a very angry man who had been phoned many times by a company in Bern trying to sell him health insurance. He had looked up what he thought was the company's name and found our company website, so he called us and gave me a hefty mouthful of abuse, assuming that we were the culprits. Needless to say, we're not.

Does anyone know what the rogue company is called? I would gladly pass on the caller's message.

Re: Weird Calls about Optimizing health insurance

Had numerous calls from these guys too. They often ring once, then hang up, so all you see is a missed call, call back and wind up paying the bill.

They also tell you they're from the "Information Centre in Bern". When you ask which Information Centre, they tell you "the one in Bern". Basically, they're playing smart alecks to sell some scam.

And they can make it appear the call is coming from various cities. I've had calls that supposedly originate in St Gallen, Basel and Bern, but they use a different number every time.

Nothing "weird" about them. They're the worst type of telemarketers ever. I've received countless calls from them, and I told them a million times that we have a star in the book (meaning "do not call"), to take me off any list, and to never call me again. I also mentioned many times that I filed a complaint with SECO (Staatssekretariat für Wirtschaft). They don't seem to care, and continue to call. I've answered calmly, I've tried moderately upset, I yelled a few times, but nothing seems to work.
I have complained to BAKOM and they told me the tele-marketeers behaviour is indeed illegal, and I should prosecute them. Quite honestly, I can't be arsed, but I did write a letter to a company near Biel and told them I am prosecuting them.

My best aproach to date is simply to shout f* off, and hang up. Anything else wastes my time even more, and letting off steam by shouting at them makes me feel a teeny weeny bit better.

They want to make money on you. The best way (maybe even the only way) to make the calls disappear is to make them waste money on you, i.e. by you wasting their time.

Jern, there are multiple firms. Most operate from outside CH so they're not subject to swiss laws, which make the calls illegal.

Actually, they do operate from inside Switzerland and they get round the illegality of their calls by not actually selling you anything over the phone.

They just want you to agree to a home visit so they can execute their hard sell.

Here is a tip: most phones have (buried deep in the settings perhaps, but there all the same) a feature which automatically turns off your phone during "do not disturb" hours.... I used to have my Blackberry shut off at 22:00 and start up at 06:00 whatever local time I was in to avoid work calls in the middle of the night from (daytime) Zurich.
