Avoiding astronomical car hire additional insurance charges

I just read an article in the Torygraph about the charges for "additional cover" you can buy from your vacation car rental firm; often more than the rental itself. The article author recommended buying your own car hire insurance before you travel, for a fraction of the cost. Having been stung for car hire repair costs once in the UK, I wondered if the same exists for Swiss residents, and it does. For example, this company provides care hire insurance worldwide from 9.-. They're just an example I found on a quick Google search, and probably not the only one, but it's nice to know it's available.

just make sure you're covered in the T&Cs - there are some UK ones that are valid only if you live in the EU, for example. So check before you spend and find you can't claim...!

That's why I deliberately chose a Swiss company as an example, but yes, you're absolutely correct.

I wonder if the TCS provide such a service? Goes to find out......

If you have a gold credit card - and use it to pay for a hire car - you are covered.

This is a good card for those who travel frequently on Swiss - if you have a high status it is free - and you earn miles each month

I'm more of an Easyjet infrequent flyer, unfortunately.

Check out this thread.

Their annual "deluxe" policy is £45 and it's valid for Swiss residents. They are good and pay up fast - I know as I had a claim against them once and it was settled with no hassle a week or so after I sent them all the paperwork.

Bonus: the discount code WWT10 still works and gives you 10% discount.
