Using Form A for Health Insurance exemption

Hey guys,

I asked my health insurance company back in the States to send me Form A and they agreed. I have Blue Cross Blue Shield. I'm waiting for it in the mail now... do you think the Swiss insurance will allow this exemption?

I'm 1.5 months in to my time here in Switzerland, so I'm near the point where I need to suck it up and buy Swiss health care (before I get assigned something ridiculously expensive)

Best,
Matt

Re: Using Form A for Health Insurance exemption

Not likely. You have to prove that your health insurance provides the same coverage as a Swiss-based insurer, and generally there are enough points in the fine print that make it not fall under an exemption. Keep in mind that if te exemption is denied, you need to make sure you sign up for insurance before the deadline or the municipality will assign an insurance to you. It's not always the cheapest either. Also remember that your Swiss insurance will be backdated to the day you arrived and you have the privilege of paying for it from the day you arrived as well.

Re: Using Form A for Health Insurance exemption

Swiss health insurance is governed by Swiss laws, and not by the shareholders. They also have to fully insure any applicant,
with any previous medical condition. They cannot pick & choose, so consider it as a social taxation.

Choose the best on here, I recommend the Visana, HMO policy.

As you are a student and form A is signed then probably yes. Not sure until you actually apply to the health authorities and this might take a while. If they deny you should still have the chance to choose your own insurer after you get the reply [as it is the same authority who chooses an insurer for you that makes the decision]. In case of denial I recommend Swisscare. This is definitely accepted by the Zurich authorities if you are a student.
