Basel rip-off? Insurance charge for entire month even if not arrived/registered yet?!

Situation:

Landed from US and registered in Basel Stadt on the 25th of month X. US health insurance covered family until the end of month X. Finally got Swiss health insurance and I know I have to pay, and insurance has to cover, retroactively to registration.

Best case scenario: Swiss insurance/authorities understand that I had my family covered for month X so insurance can start charging from day one of month X+1. (fat chance of this)

Worst case scenario: Dismiss the US health insurance and Swiss insurance is backtracked to 25th of month X.

Rip-off scenario of which I am informed today: SWICA (and all other insurers) in Basel, will charge me the basic insurance for the entire month of X.

Questions:
Does anybody know anything about this?
Am I unfair in thinking that this is very very unfair: Forcing my family to pay for 24 days of insurance when we were not even in the country?
Is there anything I can do?
Is this a SWICA or a general thing for all insurance companies in Basel?
Is it even a Basel thing? Do other cantons have this?

Thank you in advance.

Re: Basel rip-off? Insurance charge for entire month even if not arrived/registered y

this is normal/typical.

welcome to switzerland.

you can avoid by registering from 1 of the month.

just think of it as an easy introduction. you will soon get used to having to pay a lot of money for nothing in return.

It is the rule of the Swiss government, that health insurance is charged back to the first day of the month you arrived here.

You need to read the Forum: there are plenty of more surprises out there!

Questions:
Does anybody know anything about this?
Yup. It's pretty standard, though not obvious if you've not found out the hard way.

Am I unfair in thinking that this is very very unfair: Forcing my family to pay for 24 days of insurance when we were not even in the country?
No. It's reasonable to think it's unfair, but... (see next answer)

Is there anything I can do?
No. It's standard (and obligatory)

Is this a SWICA or a general thing for all insurance companies in Basel?
Is it even a Basel thing? Do other cantons have this?
It's all companies and all cantons (you might get a dodgy agent that'll start your insurance from the following month, but he'd be acting illegally). If you can take any glimmer of positiveness out of this, then at least you know it's not personal.

Thank you in advance.
Bitte
Anyway. Welcome to Basel, and welcome to the forum. I hope this'll be the only crappy thing, and you enjoy the rest of your time here

Re: Basel rip-off? Insurance charge for entire month even if not arrived/registered y

My daughter was born on the 31st at 18h23.

Had to pay for the whole month.

She left to move to the US on the 7th (21 years later).

Had to pay for that whole month as well.

It's normal, even for Swiss.

A bit selfish of her mother. She could have crossed her legs for a bit.

No, it was the kid's fault, she was 5 weeks early, emergency caesarian.

Yep, it is a well known fact, Lugano is attractive: if she was in Olten or Le Locle, she would have been born 10 days later, even a Swiss baby.

Well, if she hadn't, one or both would have died, so she didn't really have much choice.

Re: Basel rip-off? Insurance charge for entire month even if not arrived/registered y

There are a lot of previous posts about it- and warnings too. From me for instance, as we arrived, I believe, on the 29th of March 2009 and had to pay for the whole month. Hence it is better to join EF and look for advice BEFORE you move to Switzerland yep- the way it is, and yes, it hurts Certainly if anyone is having an elective Ceasarian, get it done at the beginning of a month (my first was an emergency on the 29th of June 1973... but in the UK, pheeeew).

moral of the story: don't have daughters.

also, tom is not a true swiss, else his daughter would have been born on 1 jan and left for the US on the 31st (well, not for the US, but probably some other faraway canton in switzerland).

Contact health insurance agents. I think they can start contract from day one of month X+1 for some insurance companies.

Health Insurance - first 3 months...once again
