Cancelling car insurance - when can I do this?

I know about health insurance but am a bit confused about car insurance. I am keen to know as I think I am paying too much and would like another company.

Is there a set time (like health insurance) when I need to cancel it? Or does it depend on when I took out the policy? I started with an annual contract but moved it to a quarterly one about a year and a half ago.

Thanks!

Why don't you ask your insurance direct- they know what their rules and conditions are- we don't- so much easier this way, surely?

No worries, so your response suggests that it is not a set rule like health care but depends on my insurance. That is all I wanted to know.

If you read your policy it will tell you the beginning and the end dates, and usually you
cannot cancel the policy before the end date,
unless,
a) you scrap or sell your car, and you buy another car
or
b) the insurance company raises the premiums (I have forgotten the allowed % increase )

Have you signed a 5 year contract, possible as the price is fixed.....

If they increase at all you can cancel, a long term agreement on identical terms is exactly that.

I had a "three year" contract with Baloise but was able to cancel during any year. Generally speaking this is how most of them work and you have to give notice by the end of September. If the company had put the price up any year then I would have been able to cancel at a later time. The conditions will be in your policy, if you can understand legal (Swiss) German.

This is wrong - this is how they should work in any reasonable system.

However, many don't - they are a fixed term and can't be cancelled unless the premium is changed or you sell the vehicle.

Typically also insurance tax changes are not classified as a change.

Next time around I wouldn't sign a fixed term contract, it's a total competition killer.

Cancel the registration in your name, put it in your wife's, and write a letter to your insurance that the car has been sold.

Ha ha! Wish I had a wife (but I am a woman already myself).

I seem to have added a yearly break clause in my contract. Wasn't that clever thinking...So, it appears that I have to give notice 3 months before July 4th which is when the contract started. Hurrah.

What if I request a change of cover level and the recalculated premium is not acceptable to me? Can I decline the new offer and take my insurance elsewhere with only 1 month notice?

Dont think so.. We had a similar experience and they did not let us cancel it until we sold it...

Re: Cancelling car insurance - when can I do this?

I think there are three ways to get rid of car insurance 'mid-term': sell it, re-register e.g. under dual plates or write it off (unintentionally). I had five year contract but I think it had yearly cut-off. Still one year seems a long time of notice, in most countries you can change if you get better quote from another company with short notice. So before signing new insurance is the time to negotiate what there is to negotiate...

When sold is straight forward, have no experience on the second option and the third I would try to avoid

How do you organize the cancellation when you trade in your old car? Is it done by the dealer or should I send a registered letter of cancellation?

It gets cancelled at midnight the day the grey card is annulled.

And should I contact them to reimburse me the premium paid pro rata?

Re: Cancelling car insurance - when can I do this?

Not answering the latest question in this thread, but I wanted to point out a fourth way to cancel your car insurance contract -- by making a claim. You don't have to write the car off, you just need to make a claim. So if there is a small dent or scratch that you'd like to get fixed (or of course something more major), it may make sense to pay the requisite excess, get the repair done, and cancel your insurance (if that's your objective).

Re: Cancelling car insurance - when can I do this?

Just a little anecdote around cancelling / renewing ..

Friend of mine didn't realize that his insurance had expired, was out of town or something.
A few days after the expiry his wife went to their underground parking and found that the plates had been removed and a 200chf fine left instead by the police. Unknown how they had even entered the parking.

Was all sorted pretty quickly but just watch out if you are 'between insurances'

Odd, as insurance doesn't expire here, nor can it be cancelled, if the car is registered.

that's what i thought too when i sold my car and motorcycle, but it turned out after a couple of months that I had to inform the insurer and then they reimbursed me retroactively until the day of cancellation. perhaps it depends on the insurance company .
