Confused about coverage in rest of Europe on Swiss Health Insurance

I was looking at my Swiss Health Insurance card (Avanex) which has a logo on the front and a blue back with a bunch of fields. I also happen to have a "Blue card" from Sweden (standard for Swedes/Danes etc nowadays) which has exactly the same fields, but also has additional text that says "If you need to you can go to any hospital in the EU/ESS and Switzerland and show them this card to get treatment" (in short terms). The swiss card has nothing like this on it, but everything else is the same.

I thought by default I'd be covered if I left Switzerland within the EU, but maybe that's not so.

Does one always need to add extra insurance on top of the basic coverage to get this kind of coverage in case of emergencies? If so, what is it called?

I'm a bit confused about the whole thing, I figured it was just like the Swedish one.

Mine (from Sympany) has a little text on the front that says "Cost authorisation worldwide in an emergency" in multiple languages, below the emergency phone number.

EDIT : If that's any help. When I applied for the insurance, I don't remember selecting anything extra for worldwide coverage.

Do you mean for a holiday then if so we have an additional insurance that covers you world wide, and if you have an accident, they will even send a plane for you with a Doctor, and Nurse to take care of you until you get to the hospital in Switzerland.

Yes, holidays and random border crossings so to speak, not long-term stuff. So I assume it looks like I'll need to add additional insurance.. From looking at the Avanex site and a google translation I saw that one of their things called "TOP" (which is like 20 more CHF per month) says:

TOP cover costs abroad, glasses and contact lenses, Zahnfehlstellungskorrekturen in children and adolescents, health and international legal protection, personal assistance, etc.

I have a feeling that's the one...

Even when you have the basic insurance with Progres they cover you worldwide for up to 2 times the local cost. I was pregnant when I went to the US and checked it out to make sure I was covered.

Re: Confused about coverage in rest of Europe on Swiss Health Insurance

:bump:

I'm traveling to Egypt in a few months with a tour group and they require at a minimum that everyone has travel medical insurance. I'm also with Avanex, and am thinking that they will not cover that at all (I'll call tomorrow to be sure, but I picked them because they were the cheapest and was hoping to not need any insuring while I was here ).

Does anyone know a good provider just for travel medical insurance? I'm not really interested in lost luggage / trip cancellation, just the medical. Any assistance is appreciated.

Re: Confused about coverage in rest of Europe on Swiss Health Insurance

I called Avanex a month before my trip and they said they'd send papers for me to sign go get the additional needed coverage, which they never did. This is the second time they say they'll send stuff and never do.

As I just didn't have the time to fiddle with that and as I was leaving in 2 days, I just went with a site I've used in the past when I was traveling around the globe, which is:

http://worldnomads.com/

They offer travel insurance (medical only if you so wish), and you can do various selections etc etc. It's very easy to use, and seems to work well. I remember researching it back when I first bought insurance and people were recommending that site.

That's what I went with, I still need to call Avanex yet again and get it done, but it's getting a bit frustrating

And just to add, I received an email from Worldnomads this morning with a x-mas special for 10% off your travel insurance with the code WNXMAS in case you want it a little cheaper. It's good until Jan 31, 2009.
