What kind of travel/health insurance did you use during your move?

We are planning to leave Switzerland permanently and all the travel/health insurance covers I have looked at seem to require a country of residence. Since we will be deregistered here and not really at the new place yet, what kind of insurance cover can we get?

Thanks heaps for any insights!

I'm moving in September.

For the health insurance, you will be paying the first 300-2500 CHF yourself anyway, and you can back-claim for 3 months (according to my research) after you register.

As for the travel insurance, that should not be bound to your place of residence (but since that's a private insurance, it can differ a lot across countries).

Why de-register? Take a long holiday, come back and then de-register, you could then keep your health insurance.

Sorry, disregard, I misread you question.

Depends on the country you are moving to. Different countries have different timers for when you need to actually register, but (at least within EU), it should be pretty much standardized.

You will always get the acute care anywhere, even without registering.

Which, depending on where they're going will be useless. Fine for the EU, worthless for the rest of the world. Still, it would give them a resident address.

Google for worldwide travel/health insurance and see if any of the names that come up require residency or not.

Re: What kind of travel/health insurance did you use during your move?

Thanks for all the suggestions.

We are going back downunder, so we will definitely deregister.

I googled the search terms suggested a while back and have since researched about 20 different insurance companies but no luck so far. You can only get insurance for when you travel from your country of residence and return to the same country, not when you change country. I thought maybe I am looking in the wrong place and maybe someone found an insurer that actually insured them for the time they were in transit, so to speak.

Well, the traveling agency/flight operator/etc... should offer "travel insurance" for the actual transit.

I'm not sure if the travel insurance you get on Credit/Debit cards need for you to be insured somewhere, but I don't think so.

The insurance cover we get through CC specifically states that it only insures trips from country of residence and return. Serves me right for reading the small print.

Try worldnomads. They are flexible with country of residence, and I'm sure that you can start and extend your cover when you are already away.

Re: What kind of travel/health insurance did you use during your move?

So the reply I got when I explained our situation:

For the purposes of this insurance, your country of permanent residence is the country where you:

1 Are a citizen or a legal, permanent resident
2 Have access to long-term medical care through a national health insurance scheme and/or private health insurance (not including reciprocal health agreements)
3 Will be repatriated to for ongoing medical care if you’re unable to continue your trip
4 Have unrestricted, unconditional right of entry
5 Have a residential address

If you believe that you and your family meet all the criteria listed above as a resident of ..., you’re welcome to go ahead and purchase the policy.

To me that sounds as if they are just covering their arses as in case of a claim they could argue that we are not yet covered by points 2, as we only have access to that once we enter the country and 5, as we will be staying with friends until we find our own place.

Many people must be in a similar situation as ours when they move, for example when moving from country A to country B and are citizens of neither etc.

Any thoughts?

Re: What kind of travel/health insurance when permanently leaving Switzerland?

Just reviving this thread to let others in a similar situation know. I have had an incredibly hard time finding a one way insurance that allows for a change in country of residence.

So if you are planning to leave Switzerland permanently to settle somewhere else, be sure to read the small print and make sure that your travel insurance is really valid for one way travel.

Seems easier to find if you are doing the same in reverse, at least for some countries, say move from Australia or UK to Switzerland.

Please share if you have found an insurance that covers one way trips with change of permanent address.
