Travel Insurance on top of Health Insurance

Hello all,

Hopefully this doesn't come across as a stupid question!

I have basic health insurance, as is mandated here in Switzerland. I was interested to understand my coverage abroad so called my health insurance provider. They advised that I was covered for medical care overseas, generally at an equivalent level of what I would be entitled to here in Switzerland. For Europe, I always carry my EHIC card. One exception the insurance provider stated however was that in countries such as USA where healthcare is particularly expensive. It was recommended that I take an offered supplement out with them which covers additional healthcare in countries such as this.

So my question is, do I need additional 'travel insurance' to cover me when abroad? Any personal possessions of concern (phone, laptop, jewelry etc.) are covered by my home contents insurance when abroad and I am not concerned about missed flights, lost time, cancellations on hotels etc.

I am only really concerned (in this case) about health cover whilst abroad. I specifically do not want to find myself financially exposed should I take ill whilst overseas. I believe that I would be covered but just want to check that I haven't missed anything.

I guess this matter applies to every Swiss resident, so interested to understand people's views and opinions!

Thanks!

Re: Travel Insurance on top of Health Insurance

Depends on where you're travelling to. For Europe then the EHIC card is enough, but if going to the US then no way will you be covered. And check exactly what that supplemental cover provides. I was recently checking and found that normally hospital cover is only up to 2,500 which is way too low for the States. If you can, get unlimited which seems to be the only other option here in Switzerland. Minimum emergency medical cover you should be looking for in a policy is $1 million.

I eventually ended up buying from Expatriate Healthcare via the Worldwide Insure.com website, but if you google "international travel insurance" you'll get several companies come up you can research further. Expat wasn't cheap, nearly CHF400 for our trip, but that includes lost baggage, etc, and cancellation options. It gives me the peace of mind coverage-wise that I was looking for.

Re: Travel Insurance on top of Health Insurance

Unless you say where you are going and what you are planning to do there is it pretty hard to answer. Weekend shopping trip to France? You are good. Climbing Mount Everest? Probably something to think about...

I for example:
- use my credit card for hotel and flight bookings. It comes with a travel insurance for anything that I paid with the card...
- only have a special insurance for the sport I do, scuba diving, as accidents there typically require expensive special treatments and I do not want to have that discussion with my healt insurance when I can get everything covered for something around 1-200 CHF per year.
