Re: KPT, CSS or Visana

In swiss romande the price of KPT-CPT is astronomic, had them for 30+ years, they are very good but get promises in writing before any operation (as with all insurances).

Re: KPT, CSS or Visana

If you rely on English speaking, Visana may be a poor choice. That could be for our area (winterthur) though.

Re: KPT, CSS or Visana

We've been happy with KPT. No issues getting reimbursed, prompt payment, and they've paid for every doctor we've been to even if not referred by Hausarzt. They also arranged to pay the hospital directly when I had an operation, which was nice.

Although I'm on basic insurance, I think we pay a bit extra for me to go to whatever doctor, without needing referral from the Hausarzt.

Do you have specific medical conditions or medications that you are curious about the difference in coverage? Or maybe more specific questions we can answer?

Re: KPT, CSS or Visana

If your thinking of CSS you might want to try Arcasana. Their cheaper subsidiary with the same benefits.

Re: KPT, CSS or Visana

Personally I was insured with CPT/KPT for nearly 30 years. I was involved in a long issue with them which took the better part of 2 years to resolve and involved re-imbursements of up to 4000 CHFs. They failed to recognize my doctor as being a recognized generalist despite his meeting the requirements of the contractual conditions.
I had my "protection juridique" involved who they themselves had to engage a lawyer.
The CPT/KPT were arrogant, unable to acknowledge they had made a mistake and when asked to substantiate a claim they had made, simply went into "black-hole" mode (that is sucking up everything sent to them and simply not replying). Even when finally their own legal people acknowledged their mistake, the staff responsible for settling claims continued to stonewall.
I even once managed to speak to the managing director, but manifestly the CPT/KPT staff fail to follow even his instructions. I think it took the better part of 3 months to get all my claims paid once they had acknowledged errors, partly because they continued to not pay up new bills sent to them.
They also committed fraud by taking money from premiums paid for supplementary insurance and using it for other purposes, which they had been explicitly told they had no right to do.

Re: KPT, CSS or Visana

CSS have sneakily changed their billing system so as of June, you pay each month in advance. This means we pay twice at the end of May, for May and June. The only time we would see any tangible benefit from this is if we were to change insurers; if we stay with them, we've effectively paid double in May. Which is a right royal PITA as we start paying our canton tax at the same time.

Re: KPT, CSS or Visana

Thanks for all reply, I can communicate in French and hubby in German so language not an issue.

I am considering them for their international insurance and easy re-entry into CH system (hence the specific companies as they are the only ones with Swica who offer such products).

(Did not ask about Swica as I know them already )

If I have understood the situation correctly, the change was forced on CSS by the BAG:

http://www.20min.ch/finance/news/story/27596447

Roughly:

The reason for the sudden changeover is a complaint from the Federal Office of Public Health. In a review of the insurance group, the BAG decided that the current CSS billing practice was not in compliance with Article 90 of the Verordnung über die Krankenversicherung. Under that regulation premiums are always to be paid in advance.

Soooo... thanks for the double premium largely goes to the BAG.

(FYI, paying either yearly or semi yearly gets you a small rebate. Not a lot, but every little helps. And might eliminate the pain of this kind of system change.)

Re: KPT, CSS or Visana

Yes, it's not a decision CSS have made themselves. See their website:

https://www.css.ch/en/kampagne/umstellung.html

PaddyG, another reason to have that emergency extra bank/post account I keep going on about. Mainly for our tax payments, but a bit extra put in every month covers these unexpected surprises if needed.

Re: KPT, CSS or Visana

About Visana, I would recommend avoiding them. We have been 1 year with them and the experience has been very disappointing. We live in Geneva and the agency here seem to not know the basics of customer service, furthermore they don't even seem to understand their own internal procedures.

Wrote several emails and letters to the Bern HQ to complain about this awful service in Geneva and got no response.

To me, to avoid, completely unreliable.

Have been very happy with CSS (Arcosana) - their online services are great and the new app and shopping channel may add value (depends on your interests).

CSS, no complaints.

In fact, when I called to ask for documents needed prior to hospitalization, they even sent me a get well card!

Re: KPT, CSS or Visana

If price isn't a big factor, Visana is great
The supplementary coverage from Visana is one of the best in Switzerland. Insurance descriptions / brochure in English, good app and English service.
