I am an american citizen living in Lausanne. I am covered under Allianz private liability insurance or assurance responsibilité civile privée. I have a question about what would be covered because I had a small incident and I am quite worried.

I am a PhD student. I did a small collaborative project in France. They lent me a key to their office where they house some expensive lab equipment. The last day I was there, I locked up all the doors and slid the key under the door. I told them that I did this. Apparently, they did not find the key. I don't know how this is possible, but I'm worried somebody somehow stole the key from the crack of the doorway. Would I be covered for theft of their equipment?

secondly, I cannot find any information about what exactly is covered. It's not really explained in detail in my contract and I can't find any information on the website. The agent from Allianz simply told me:
Private civil liability is covering all private liability matters including damage to the apartment and liability to (private) persons borrowing you their car.

Where can I find this?? Thanks.

Re: Is this covered under my private liability policy?

Cleaner came in after you'd put the key under the door, picked it up and either returned to reception or walked off with it at the end of their shift, forgetting they had it.

Whether the insurance would cover you I don't know, but guess maybe not. Your Swiss permit doesn't allow you to work in France for a start. Don't know whether it would cover you outside of Switzerland either.

Contact Allianz and ask them. Or look at their terms and conditions.

Re: Is this covered under my private liability policy?

I can tell you that in our household insurance, we are covered for loss and/or theft while traveling, but it depends on the particulars of your policy. I would call your insurer again for clarification, and be insistent that you get someone you can understand.

You could be asked to pay for a new key or to change the lock. Or perhaps they've located the key. Let's hope so. On the other hand, telling you to slide the key back under the door is pretty sloppy on their part.

Does your advisor or chair know these people? Can he/she intercede? That's sort of their job. At any rate, if there is any question about you being in France, someone from your program might need to verify that your collaboration is part of your degree. That should not be a problem, however.

Good luck!

Most Swiss insurance policies have a clause stating that you have to pay the first CHF 200 in each claim. For a key lost in France, you probably won't reach that sum.

Yes, but I think that he is more concerned that the key will be used to steal stuff, not just the cost of the key.

Yes and that's why I suggested he/she might have to pay to have the lock changed, and to see whether or not that's covered by personal liability.

Re: Is this covered under my private liability policy?

The problem here is that legally it's not theft off OP in the first place as he gave away the key freely and intentionally. If theft occured at all it was theft off the lab owner, who of course may try to hold OP responsible.

Whether it's covered depends on your contract. The best thing to do is to call your insurer and hope they don't lie.
