PhD student status

Hi everyone,

I'm a bit confused about my student status at the moment.

I'm almost finished my PhD. My contract with the University finishes at the end of October, but I won't be finished writing or submit my thesis until November/December, and I'll have my defence in January 2018.

Since I won't have actually graduated when my contract ends, am I still officially a student? Or am I no longer considered a student once my contract is over?

I'm trying to figure this out because if I'm no longer considered a student I have to change my health insurance from SwissCare to another company.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

The SwissCare policy "General insurance conditions" says at p.6, para. 1.5.C:

"The insurance contract will be cancelled at the end of the month in the case where the insured:
● has completed his education or advanced training in Switzerland,"

Re: PhD student status

You will have already paid your university doctoral fees until roughly Jan 30ish (or whenever the semester ends). So if you do nothing, you're a student until then.

If you defend your thesis in January and matriculate, then you won't a student no more either but only as of your defense and matriculation.

Thanks Kngavl. That's what I was thinking too but there's so much bureaucracy in this country I wanted to make sure!

I asked our group secretary too. I'll let you guys know what shes says too in case anyone else needs the info!

Re: PhD student status

Have you ever been a foreign student in the USA? That was bureaucracy, I can tell you... I wasn't even allowed to cross the border to Canada without consent of my school!

And I have a CH-Passport with wich I can enter Canada without any problems. But being a foreign student, I was held hostage.
