supplemental & work accident insurance

Iím having surgery in Jan and the work accident insurance has covered all so far. I require to be an in-patient for several days. I have supplemental hospital insurance covering a private room, does anyone know how this mix works?

I assume my work insurance wonít cover a private room, do I have to inform the hospital and/or my supp insurance company?

Anyone with any similar experiences?

Unless your private insurance covers accidents it won't pay anything, medical insurance only covers illness for employed people.

First check what coverage your accident insurance provides.
Second, if the coverage is not to your likening either read your supplement insurance policy and accompanying documents or contact your insurance company to check if the supplement extents to accidents (it is normaly an option which you can in-/exclude). If it also covers accident it could be that it only applies to the room service level but not to the treatment level.

Worst-case, you can also talk to the hospital about how much it would cost you to upgrade the room by paying out of your own pocket.

Also be aware that some hospitals have the possibility to upgrade to a single room on the general (that is, not private) floor, which would be less expensive than upgrading to the private floor.

No flowers or morning newspaper, and still the general-ward food - but if privacy is what drives your wish for an upgrade this can be a good option.

To give you an idea of prices: at our local hospital an upgrade to a single room on the basic insurance floor was CHF 200 per night, upgrade to the fancy private floor was CHF 400 per night. I would imagine prices would vary significantly depending on the hospital.

Re: supplemental & work accident insurance

Many thanks for all the posts.

In closing, I contacted my HR who informed me a private room under their basic accidental work insurance was not covered, however they then informed me that they have supplementary / complimentary accident insurance with another company which covers a private room for hospital stays. They supplied the policy and its number, told me to contact the hospital, provide the details to the hospital and they would make all the necessary arrangements.

Hoping all works out for Jan and many thanks who posted for the guidance.
