Re: Telephone calls for health insurance

There exists software that randomly dials mobile numbers. It's known in Switzerland that mobile numbers mostly begin with 076/078/079

As soon as the number picks up a light flashes in a call centre and whoever is free grabs the line and begins the pitch. The reasons for hearing no-one is all the sales people were busy and there was a software glitch, as the automatic dialling should slow down when all the sales people are occupied.

These centres are huge and can employ upwards of 5,000 people, and one day a team will sell health insurance, the next day car insurance and the day after double glazing! A few days later they may be fielding calls for Lloyds Bank or whoever.

Once they get live numbers, from either source, they will then sell these numbers to other call centres and so in the space of a week your number could be with a dozen or more call centres. And just because you see a Swiss number, does not mean they are in Switzerland, they use VOIP calling so could be anywhere in the world.

War Dialer. Named so after its prominent appearance in the 1983 movie War Games

Back to topic: Had yesterday morning one on my phone. Took over the lead in the conversation and turned the tables around. Suddenly it was me selling and promoting insurances

Did you close the deal?

If so, just lean back and let the calls come in.

Re: Telephone calls for health insurance

Some years ago, a friend of mine in England, and fed up with these nuisance calls, got one of these numbers you call and pay Ģ 1 a minute. He made sure this number was everywhere and would keep the cold callers on the line as long as possible. For a few months he made hundreds of pounds a week and then the calls suddenly stopped. I guess the cold callers got wise!

Re: Telephone calls for health insurance

This happened to me today - I got a call from bundes something for Zurich canton and because I didn't have my morning coffee yet - I somehow agreed to have a meeting with them next week.
When I hang up the call - after few minutes when the coffee was already consumed I tried to call the number back to cancel the meeting but of course the number doesn't exist (shit).
Now I ended up giving my address for the meeting and no possibility to cancel it (as I do not have any other contact to those mutherf.... than just their not working number) -

Stupid me ....

Yes it's at home and it would be rude to not show up - so we do it like men would do - I show up and I explain why I can't have this meeting but I was stupid

When they come, sell them the newest whiff in weight reduction, the best Jesus has said yet, and present them with a selection of vibrating "massage wands".

Oh, and to not forget to offer some coffee and a glass of water, whereas upon delivery point to the fine print a the fridge with prices which puts water in the eyes of any barista at San Marcos, Venetia. All while unshaven wearing a wife beater, some "whites", a bathrobe and socks in house slippers.

Well if you go have the meeting, It might be good to have a friend there to ensure you don't agree to anything else... just saying.

They're the ones who are scammers trying to sign you up for something you don't need. Being a man has nothing to do with it. If you don't want to meet them, don't be there or don't answer the door. They already pressured you once and they'll do it again. It's only a minute of your time, and all that.

If you insist on meeting them anyway, follow Jim2007's advice and have someone with you. It's possible that you've already agreed to buy the product and they're going to show up with a contract for you to sign.

I have a strict policy not to answer the phone if I don't recognize the number. If it's that important the person can leave a message.

Is there any way these people can be stopped? I wonder if reporting these number(s) to the police would produce anything? Are they not breaking some law? I get called every now and then from a non-existing "Zurich's info centre" even if I keep adding the numbers to the ignore list. Every time I ask them (first politely and then less so) to remove my number from their record and all they can say is "I will leave a note", so annoying...
The best is to have Swisscom. They filter out all such calls.

I'm with Swisscom and it didn't work for me too

No worries - I won't sign anything - they caught me by surprise - normally I do not talk with anything that comes to insurance calls but (well this time they have me) ...

No they don't. Man up. Be a man. Answer the door. When they tell you who they are, tell them that in the same way they wasted your time with an unsolicited phone call, you're wasting their time. Wish them a nice day and close the door.
