notice period at the end of the contract?

Dear all,
Do I need to give a 3 month’s notice period at the end of contract?

my 5 year car insurance contract, a rip off by itself, will expire at the end of Dec 2017 and the insurance company sent a new one for the same amount (50% higher than competition).
I tried to tell them I am out after the current contract ends but they insist I can not because I did not inform them 3 months in advance. Furthermore, I need to stay for at least another year. As mentioned, this is not a cancellation but an end of contract.

Is this even legal as long as the new contract arrived late November? What are my options to get out as fast as possible?

Best, Mihai

Re: notice period at the end of the contract?

What does your contract say? If it's 3 months notice, then 3 months notice you have to give - in writing and by registered post to be on the safe side.

Re: notice period at the end of the contract?

As always:
Read before you sign, and in case of dispute read it again, nobody can answer your question with certainty without seeing the contract. With that said, auto-renewal for insurance contracts is ubiquitous, albeit I'd expect it to be for one year only.

You can get out of the contract by getting rid of the car (sell, trash, or whatever), or by making a claim (not sure if it has to be accepted by the insurance or not to allow you to cancel).

Generally speaking you can also cancel if the insurance company wants to change the premium.

Thanks Medea, the contract says 3 months for cancellation not before termination.

Thanks Urs, I am at the end of contract, I saw the new one 1 month before the new term should start. How can someone cancel or accept a new contract 3 months before starts and 2 months before having it? Can you say no to something you did not see? I am confused

You agreed to yearly extensions unless you would cancel this 3 months ahead.

It is all in the papers you signed.

Thanks, I may consider changing the registration on my wife`s name. Seriously, I had a chat with them some time ago to lower it to realistic values (in between counteroffers, not even the lowest) and they would have a happy customer. They said sure and lowered it from 1700 to 1670.

We did that, but from hers to mine.

That would probably the smart thing whether you switch the insurance company or not, especially if your nationalities are the same. Everything else being the same women usually get lower premiums.

Why didn't you cancel right there and then, during your chat??? Frankly that's the very absolutely most obvious thing to do. They'll take you (back) in any time should you so decide.
