Last minute travel insurance for canceling flight due to sickness?

Hey friends,

My husband woke up with the flu this morning and now has a 39.5 fever, we were set to fly out tomorrow morning to the US for the first time for XMAS in 5 years.

Would you happen to know if I could book travel insurance through Swiss Air/Alliance and get a refund for my flights with a Dr's note? Is it too late to do this? I know it's not the most kosher thing to do, but we are utterly devastated and now broke. Our pet boarding is also demanding full payment too...so much money for nothing.

Thanks!

Re: Last minute travel insurance for canceling flight due to sickness?

How did you pay for the flights?

Most credit card companies offer some sort of travel insurance if you pay for all or a part of the trip with the card.

And to answer your original question, no it is not possible to take out a travel cancellation policy today and cancel tomorrow as the insurer will not accept pre-existing conditions.

Which card / bank?

You can check the Ts&Cs directly.

Also you should call their hotline tonight!

I hope your credit card company will cover you, but I feel impelled to say that when you book these things, if you can't afford to take the hit if you're prevented from travelling, buy insurance.

Yearly travel insurance isn't massively expensive.

Neither the most kosher thing, nor possible. No one sells insurance for events that have already happened (e.g. you’ve already bought the ticket, and your husband has already fallen ill).

Re: Last minute travel insurance for canceling flight due to sickness?

Gutted for you- but they are right- no insurance possible at this stage.

And I know this won't help- but really, were you really going to go to the States without insurance? Does not bear thinking about.

Why not ask your airline company if you could fly in a few days, with a supplement? Or .... why don't YOU go- he is a big boy and not at death's door.

+1 check with the airline. I have had to rebook a couple of times due to illness in the family, it did cost something but wasn´t too bad.

Re: Last minute travel insurance for canceling flight due to sickness?

It's too late to get that insurance now.

Rebook the flight. If a non-refundable rate, call and ask, sometimes they are flexible and make an exception. I've managed to do this once with no hassle - well, a few extra $$, but that would have been the case with other rates too.

Does my health insurance here not cover me if we were to fall ill in the US? I am an idiot I guess...as I never thought about it, nor do I go home often.

I don't want to go alone to the in-laws, hehe - plus my fever just hit 38

Yes considering - given the time of the year, it will be around 1500 CHF

Needing medical treatment is only one of many things that could happen, and even if so be sure to know up to what level they refund things. Medical care in the US can be ridiculously expensive.

Maybe ... but only up to twice the cost of what it would be in Switzerland. Which, given US healthcare costs, is a piss in the pot. ALWAYS make sure you have travel insurance when going to the US - minimum cover should be at least $1 million.

Most credit card companies cover travel accidents but not cancellation. You usually need to opt-in for that at extra cost.

Otherwise just call the airline.

Sorry hun, but technically, you're both now too sick to fly. Lot's of people do fly with a temperature over 38, but it's not recommended.

This is the best advice I can find but it may be too late for you.

https://www.cntraveler.com/story/how...oo-sick-to-fly

And from Swiss' website...

Quote:
Restrictions: In which cases is it restricted to fly?.

It is restricted to fly if you are affected by one of the following:
  • Acute cold and severe feverish illness
https://www.swiss.com/ch/EN/prepare/...lth-and-travel

You could wait and see how you both feel in the morning, but if you can't go, please ask for a postponement. I'm truly sorry.

Re: Last minute travel insurance for canceling flight due to sickness?

and you need to change it, or at least inform the airline that you will not be on the flight BEFORE it leaves, possibly even before check-in time. If not, you will be a NO-show and it is a whole lot harder to change. Hope you feel better soon. There may not be many people flying Christmas eve/christmas day?? Good luck.

Re: Last minute travel insurance for canceling flight due to sickness?

Thanks so much for all of your advice...for 430 CHF we were able to re-book our flights for our anniversary next year...gutted to be without our families again this Christmas, but that's life. We both have full on flu now and it would be impossible to fly 11 hours today, nor would they let us on the flight...which I would agree with as I would hate someone who got us sick on vacation.
