car insurance - what to pay attention to?

i'm changing my license plates to CH and apparently i'll need a CH insurance, i did my search in the forum and i found some points to pay attention at such as:

- full kasko (for a new car)
- insurance while parked
- be able to get out of the contract before 5 yrs

so, my question is if there's anything else i should pay attention to? Usually insurance companies have small legal windows to pay as less as they can when the time comes, but if i can cover most of them, that would be great

also, do i need a green card every time travelling by my car in an EU country (e.g. Germany)?

Re: car insurance - what to pay attention to?

Be able to get out after 1 year!

Also check if you can have one (parking) "accident" covered without increase of the premium.

one question regarding the contract period, do people actually leave after 1-2 years (i mean is it common) and if yes, why?

also, speaking about parking, comparis has an option "damage while parked: unlimited amount?", does this mean that there's a max amount covered if the car is damaged while parked different than the max amount for a crash accident?

Some people look for cheaper/better options on a regular basis and therefore want to be able to change yearly.

I donīt like the longer time running insurances either

Marten (Marder) damage coverage is good to have. Towing and road assistance too.

You will only need it in case of a hit and run.

If you are involved in a car crash where you are not a fault you normally know who the other guy is, that is what license plates are for. In the unlikely event the other leaves the scene or is not insured (which is unlikely as the police will come and get your plates, and the old insurance is on the hook till the plates are returned) there is a special fund which will cover the costs minus a CHF 1000 deducible.

This fund does not cover parking hit and runs. Hence the "need" for an extra product.

Normally you will get a green card with all your insurance paper work.
In most European countries your license plate alone acts as the Green Card. See this map, light green means license plate, dark green means you must carry the green card, for all the rest you will need a border insurance which can be bought at the border of the respective country.

I liked the fixed 5 year contract as the price could not increase during the term. Why would a 5 year contract not be good? if you change your car you can get out of the contract.

Re: car insurance - what to pay attention to?

Get to know how the car's value is calculated, the coverage for your car alone can't be more than that. If memory serves, the difference for a given age can be more than 10% of the car's list price.

You probably won't pay 100% of the premium, can be more or less. Get to know what your bonus/malus is (varies by company), and how high the bonus can be (ie how low the premium can fall).

It's usually cheaper if the insured person is the wife rather than the husband.

And yes, for a couple a long-term contract is advantageous: The insurance is bound whereas the insured can get out any time by selling the car (including selling to the OH).
