Car insurance needed to drive car from Belgium to Switzerland - Urgent Pls!

Hi,

I just had my car shipped from US to Belgium and I need to have it insured in order for the customs to "release it". The car has us plates but is not insured. I tried several ones without luck and they react as if they never had to deal with someone in a less conventional situation as myself.

I was told by an insurance agent that I could get "transit plates" from Belgium and that would include insurance for 30 days but it turns out not to be the case. Other option he gave me was to have the car towed to Switzerland from Belgium which I would rather not do.
Anybody that could help with any information leading to a positive outcome is strongly encouraged to write here. So far this whole ordeal has been not very positive to say the least (the car was supposed to arrive in Belgium sometime in April).

Many thanks in advance!

US cars have different specs (lights, suspension, speedo, etc) so they lack EU type approval.

For example, https://jalopnik.com/a-simple-explan...1493377285/amp

One guy I worked with imported a US VW Passat and it took months to be released because of the differences.

Did you really ship a car to Belgium without working out how you were going to get it here?

Can't help with your question, but getting it brought here on a truck shouldn't be massively expensive, compared to what you must have paid for the transatlantic trip.

Re: Car insurance needed to drive car from Belgium to Switzerland - Urgent Pls!

Every country has some form of “dealer” and “transporter” licence plate issued to firms that need to drive otherwise unregistered (“SORN” in U.K. parlance) from one place to another. The insurance in attributed to the plate. You can hire ta person to which such plates have been issued to take a car somewhere for you.

Here’s an offer for temporary plates from Germany: http://www.transit-plate.com

Here’s the Belgian plate: https://mobilit.belgium.be/sites/def...sources/files/

Here’s a British firm that transports cars https://www.aceconnectautoshipping.com/

It is possible to drive a car with plates issued by a U.S. state all over Europe. It is possible to get insurance: when I did this mine was from USAA but to have to be a member to insure with them. How long you can remain in any country or whether you can bring a locally-unregistered car beyond a customs broker’s warehouse in the country where you actually live or intend to live is problematic. EU law says that a car bearing plates of a member state must be legal for the roads of where the plates come from, which generally means that if driving a U.K. SORN vehicle to a U.K. port you need to have made a prior appointment for a MoT inspection: but you would have been driving unlawfully in France even though legally (for one day) innthe UK. Switzerland’s rules are complex: flexible for non residents, strict for Swiss residents except diplomats.

Transatlantic is not so expensive in a container, around $800-1'000.-- should be more than enough.

A truck for 800km for a one off job....$3k probably

Re: Car insurance needed to drive car from Belgium to Switzerland - Urgent Pls!

For dealer plates you normally must be a car dealer or mechanic and you are not allowed to give them away.

For export plates the car normally must have been previously registered in the country you wish to export from.

You can get a frontier insurance from any Swiss Customs office (do not know what paper work you have to show them). This gives you the mandatory liability insurance which allwos you to drive in the main green card states.
https://www.nbi-ngf.ch/en/nvb/rechtl...nzversicherung

Theoretically there should be also someplace in Belgium which offers frontier insurance.

There is also a german provider for frontier insurance which offers more than just liability insurance:

Personally I'd just rent a car with a car trailer and pick it up, even with a trailer a drive towards and back to Antwerp (assuming it is there) can be done in one day.

Re: Car insurance needed to drive car from Belgium to Switzerland - Urgent Pls!

ok op, stick the job to pick it up on shiply

https://www.shiply.com/

you should get quite a few bidders, I recon it'll come in around 700-800 chf, check the feedback of the bidders carefully, and if they have cancelled jobs then walk away, bad feedback is erased from cancelled jobs, a huge flaw but there you go.

I hope you have the CoC for it? and you'll have to pay import tax, does it have euro spec lights / indicators ? any non OEM parts you've added? (this includes exhaust and wheels)

Sorry, the U.K. term for "transporter" plates, which look the same as dealer plates (both are American terms) -- red numbers on white background and a red border -- and are used any firm that transports an otherwise unused, foreign, unregistered or SORN car without its own insurance, MOT and road tax, is "trade plates"

Trade licences are issued "to motor traders and vehicle testers" broadly defined. https://www.gov.uk/trade-licence-plates The BBC Radio 4 programme suggests that traders may move cars belonging to others as well and the inclusion of "testers" and "detailers" makes clear that the plate holder doesn't have to own the car.

I'd searched for the Radio 4 programme I heard in 2013, "Trade-plating around Britain" that shows how they work. https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b021406q They are an alternative to towing or loading the car onto a transporter. When an ex-BF of my daughter left his car in her garage to return to Australia and said she could sell it, the tax disc had expired and the only practical buyer was a dealer who could drive it away with trade plates. As to whether they work internationally I have my doubts.

Another possibility (for getting rid of an unwanted car, when that is the case), especially of a U.S.-specification car, is sale to a U.S. Forces SOFA buyer.

How can you have a registered car with plates but no insurance? What state lets you get away with that?

But as I said, only the holder of those plates might use them, but not a 3rd party.

A dealer has properly better things to do than driving a car across Europe. For this job there are flat bed and vehicle trucks, which are cheaper and more convenient.
