Accident Insurance Documentation

I'm an American who recently moved to Zurich to join my wife who's been here for a bit longer.

I'm working for a large tech company via a (reputable) Swiss contracting company. When I inquired with my contracting company about documentation for my accident insurance (such as a card, or proof of insurance, or policy number) I was told that no such documentation is available, but that they provide accident insurance through SUVA and that I should contact my contracting agency in case of an accident to make any future claims.

This seems wrong to me, but I wanted to verify: what is the standard documentation for employer-issued accident insurance? Is it a card, policy statement, or something else? Verbal confirmation of insurance seems very odd to me.

Any insights welcome. Hoping this is just a communication issue, and not a major problem.

Re: Accident Insurance Documentation

Yes, the accident insurance is provided by the agency, who are your erstwhile employers, and SUVA is the largest insurer in this market.

It's not normally considered necessary to issue any sort of proof of insurance, since it's obligatory. In the event of an accident just give the employer's name (the agency) to the doctor or hospital and they will send the bill directly to SUVA. You should also, as soon as possible, notify the agency of the accident, as they'll be needing to liaise with SUVA.

You could ask for a copy of the policy, which should give you reassurance that the company is covered, and therefore its employees.

Re: Accident Insurance Documentation

Thank you for the reply Ace1. You've explained this much more clearly than did my agency!

As an aside, I'm pleasantly surprised at how little physical paper waste I've generated in my numerous dealings with Swiss bureaucracy over the last few months.

You can ask but is very unlikely you will get it.

The name of your company ist mostly good enough to get treatment as they can look it up in a database. Knowing the name of the insurance is even better.

With SUVA you have free choice of doctor and hospital but you are only covered for stays in the standard ward.

You should have got this brochure at least (there is an English version for download):
https://www.suva.ch/de-CH/material/D...d-11332-11332/

Depends on the company. Ours is in a file on the shelf in HR and they had to copy it for an employee who had an accident which went on to need legal representation so he just asked for it. No biggie.
