Health insurance - paying year upfront

Hello all,

I am looking to move my health insurance to Assura for 2019 and am considering paying the entire annual premium upfront (rather than monthly) to receive a discount.

My question is what would happen in the event that I left Switzerland in say September 2019 - would I be entitled to a refund of the last 3 months premiums? Does anyone have experience of this and know how easy it would be to get a refund in this scenario?

From what I've understood from other topics, in case you leave Switzerland you will need to de-register in your canton.

Once that is done, they will provide you the certificate. This is something you will need to show (maybe make a copy even) to the insurance provider. They will then reimburse you the months you paid upfront from that point onwards.

Though be aware that if you leave, say 3rd of September, the September month will still be paid in full and you would recieve the payment back for Oct, Nov and Dec only.

Also it seems depending on the provider, this reimbursment can take months to be processed, so don't hold your breath getting it back the very next day or something.

Is there a discount? I am with Assura and cant see anything mentioned online.

Edit: I see its 2%, not worth it for me.

Here's an example from Helsana (in German).

I donít think there are discounts for annual payments, there are premiums added for quarterly payments. At least this is what happens with my insurance company. They donít offer monthly payments.
