Re: Insurance for 2019

I guess you talk health insurance.
While some might be "nicer" than others but that's subjectively perceived, the rules for the legally demanded "Grundversicherung" are the same for all of them.
So you can look at the prices and make your choice based on that. You can change every end of the year anyway. By then you'll have all the other stuff sorted which no doubt you'll have to deal with after arrival.

However some of the "nicer" parts are quite important to some people?

Paying in advance or not
Choice of language
Speed of claims, if applicable
Online service vs phone / letter
etc etc

It's a big subject.. get advice if it's important to you.

Re: Insurance for 2019

Yes i was talking about health insurance.

i am not interested in the lowest price more about the service provided and the interface with my insurance and how fast they are.

they told me that ASSURA is the cheapest but the worse :-)

That is true. I had been wondering whether I should mention it.
But Assura really is the exception.

As to John H.'s points
1. Paying in advance or not
2. Choice of language
3. Speed of claims, if applicable
4. Online service vs phone / letter

1. depends on contract the doctor has with insurance only
2. there are at least 3 languages to chose from each of them
3. they will all tell you they're fast (except assura, I've been told they don't even accept claims before end of year?) so one has to find out oneself.
4. Isn't that a given by now?

Okay, to be a bit more productive/helpful maybe: I am with swica, been with them for years, they do have contracts with my doctor's (but as I said, that is due to the doctors and in my case coincidence), I can't remember ever talking to them on the phone (they don't bother me, give me no reason to argue = phone them), but you can do things via phone if you're into that, their bills go straight into my ebanking, their repayments straight into my account .....

Check them out, they got an English version of their website.

Re: Insurance for 2019

Here one can get a good overview:

https://swupp.ch/krankenkassenvergleich

Unfortunately its in German but google translate should help you out.

Most important it to get additional insurance for all of Switzerland.

The mandatory insurance only covers one for the Canton of residence.

Re: Insurance for 2019

My family is with Group Mutuel from beginning and i can say that im happy with them. They speak english, customer Service was always helpful. They pay back fast. I’m sending them bills straight after I get them so when there are due to pay I have money on my account already.
Some bills come home, some goes straight to insurance.
W have basic insurance for all of us with free choice of family doctor.
We have also complimentary insurance that gives you like hospitalisation all over switzerland, some money Bach for glasses, contact lenses, osteopath etc
For kids we have extra dental and orthodontic .
People go also for private or semi private, Not us though.
Mutuel has similar prices as Swica, just checked premiums for all of us with same coverage and I got same price as I have from Mutuel.

Personally, I wouldn't sweat it too much because you can always change your mind next year for the mandatory part (you have the additional cancel date June 30 if you have minimum deductible but in this case too, I wouldn't make that the reason to chose minimum deductible).

Generally speaking you want either the highest deductible or the lowest. A healthy person, in particular a male (no visits to the gynecologist), will want the highest deductible. When in doubt, if you're reasonably well off you probably want to pick the highest as well. With the 3rd child on the way I don't know how it works for the mother, somebody else will need to comment because special payment regulations may apply during pregnancy (I suspect she'll want the lowest deductible).

Currently I'm with KPT, model chosen is KPTWin.doc, this is the Hausarzt" model. You provide the contact details of the GP you generally consult and whom under this model you must(!) consult first (except for emergencies if the GP can't be reached, or if you're away from home). When I chose this one it was perhaps 5% more expensive than the absolute cheapest (more like 10% more now) but things work like a charm: I visit the doc, he may send me to a specialist, both send the bill to KPT, KPT then bills me for the balance I owe.

The premium also depends on where you live. So for your friend in Zurich model X with insurance A may be (among the) cheapest whereas for your place of residence the same may be even among the most expensive for model X (50% more than the cheapest few wouldn't be unheard of).

Language is a non-issue for me as I'm born and raised here so I can't really comment. However I haven't had contact with them beyond standard brochures, the annual bill (I pay annually in return for a small rebate) and the bill for whenever I had to visit the doc.

comparis.ch may not list all providers/models available to you because insurers must pay Comparis to be listed. www.priminfo.ch OTOH is guaranteed to list all insurers with all their models available in your commune (Gemeinde) as it's a government web site.

Re: Insurance for 2019

I used to be with KPT until I ended up in litigation with them. They refused to recognize my family doctor, even though he was in their list. They were arrogant and weren't able to accept they had made an error, until the legal department kicked in.
After the experience I moved to Assura, having decided they couldn't possibly be worse and in the 3 years I've been with them, I really can't complain. You have to pay yourself everything upfront and claim it back from them and they're often a little slow. However I've always had my claims refunded within 30 days (at KPT, when it worked, it was nearer 15 days), but you need the necessary cash flow. On the one occasion with Assura when something went wrong (a bill got lost), I called them, the phone was answered quickly, by someone whose native language was French (most big Swiss corporations are based in the German-speaking part and the French speakers are speaking a second language) and the matter dealt with efficiently.

Not necessarily "at the clinic". One normally receives the orange
payment slip later by post.

Assura will repay immediately once franchise level is reached. Typically processed in 1-2 weeks. Online portal is easy to navigate (help of browser auto translation). Agreed they are paperwork heavy but so were CSS / Intras.

Intras had to be taken to Ombudsman to return 10k chuffs of double payments from insured and insured's employer in 2015. Money received but no apology.
