Possibly check if you have a "Fremdlenker"-versicherung or -zusatz in your private liability insurance. Depending on the policy this would insure against third party damages if you only occasionally use the car of someone else which isn't or isn't fully insured. Not sure if that will get you off the hook in England in terms of having adequate insurance but it is worth a try. However, some of the Fremdlenker-Insurances are restricted to cars registered in Switzerland while others also cover cars registered in the EU.
It's not possible to have a Swiss car that is not insured as it would not have no plates, so it never covers legally required 3rd party motor insurance.

so much wrong on this thread

Its very simple, the insured driver nips down the car pound with all his documents, pays the towing and storage fee and drives his car home again.

The op gets reported for driving with no insurance, gets a fine and points on his licence (if its a uk one).

No great drama, no need for solicitors, no court visits - as long as he doesn't try to contest the charge.
Question is, how many points? I thought DWI was an automatic ban but that could well have changed.

Re: My friends Car has been seized while I was driving

What a disaster.

It was meant to be so simple too. I told my friend eventually and with a bit of online searching and some help from the posts on here, we knew what we needed to do to get his car back. We also had a solicitor recommended to us ready in the sidelines if we needed his help.

My friend was gathering all his documents but he couldn't find his insurance policy, so he called his insurance company to get another copy sent out, after he explained the situation to them, they turned around and said that they will be terminating his insurance policy for letting me drive his vehicle without checking I had adequate insurance to drive it. It would have worked out better if I stole the car off him They were being completely unreasonable, I think he was with RSA or AXA can't remember to be honest.

At this point he was pretty irate, but I told him I'd help him find a new policy and would pay for it, thought it was only fair after all I've put him through.

We had a look at a few companies online, but a lot wouldn't touch it with the car being impounded. The company we used in the end was https://www.quotechief.com they seem to be specialists in these kinds of situations. Once we had the new insurance policy we managed to get the car released after paying the fines and pound fees, I've got a pending in10 conviction on my UK licence, which I'm not too bothered about since I have my swiss one too. My friend's licence isn't affected and I don't think his insurance should be either when he comes to renew next year. He's contesting the cancellation of his old policy with his previous company, not sure where that will get him.

All ok in the end, can now try and enjoy Christmass!

How come you kept your UK license? I had to surrender mine to get the CH one, as did everybody else I know.

You could say you lost it and get a new one ordered.

Or just pretend that you never had a UK one and do the test from scratch here.

Either way round it's not valid, even in the UK, and I think that it's technically illegal to use it like that.

Making a false declaration is a criminal offence, probably best not to take your advise this time.

Re: My friends Car has been seized while I was driving

I found my old UK licence the other day, even though I left the UK over 40 years ago and have driven on French, German and Swiss licences since. For the hell of it I even managed to look up my record on the DVLC computer to discover I didn't have any points (they didn't have points 40 years ago anyway).
It's got an address that's no longer valid on it and is presumably no longer valid anyway. I used my German licence to get my Swiss licence and can't find it, so that might have been taken away from me at the time.

It wasn't advice, it was an explanation. FMF think a little more before you go on the offensive, it may save you some embarrassment.

What a stupid concept.

How do rental cars work then?

Tom

Tom, it gets even worse...if your ride is stolen and wrecked and the thief doesn't have cover, you're fooked for the damaged to your vehicle and likely any other property damage that occurs as you own the car

They sent my US license back with a little sticker on it that said "invalid". I peeled that baby off and used it in the US until it expired.

Not true if you have theft cover.

It amazes me when people do this sort of thing, without thinking that they're really breaking the law. Would you normally drive without a licence and insurance? If not (and I'll assume it) then what makes you think your little subterfuge is any different?

My daughter got hers back with no sticker when she exchanged her US one for a Swiss one this summer.
