Car insurance (bonusschutz & unfallschutz)

Hi all,
Just in the process of sorting out car insurance and wondered about a few things:

1. Mainly interested in hearing what people's opinions/experiences are on taking out Bonusschutz. I realise it depends on whether I need to make a claim, but I am struggling to get an idea of what the impact could be if I don't take it and have an accident. It is a pretty pricey add-on, but the agent I am dealing with insists it is very important to have.

2. Unfallschutz. I often have visitors from the UK who will be in the car, so from my understanding this could be useful. But are they not covered by their own travel insurance? Has anyone found this add-on useful?

Many thanks,
Nick

Bonusschutz paid for itself for us; allowed one claim a year without incurring penalties -very useful with vollkasko

Forgot to add, we have always had any driver over 25 - this is normally included as it is the car that is insured. Named kids were also relatively cheap. Unwise to depend on visitors travel insurance

Re: Car insurance (bonusschutz & unfallschutz)

The insurance salesman lives on selling, trust them at your own risk.

IMHO the Bonusschutz' usefulness depends a lot on your position on the bonus ladder. The closer you are to the bonus maximum the smaller its usefulness.

Say you cause an accident every four years and you lose three bonus steps each time. In this scenario, without Bonusschutz you keep moving in the same bonus range until eternity. So, if your bonus is maxed out already you gain little by adding a Bonusschutz. But if your bonus is small, i.e. you pay roughly the full premium, the Bonusschutz keeps you on that ladder towards maxing out the Bonus.

That said, the typical driver causes two accidents in their carreer. Whether you're above or below only you know.

Rule of thumb is pay for only what you can't afford.
