upgrade complementary insurance in the middle of the year

Dear all, Is it possible to "upgrade" complementary insurance in the middle of the year in general ? if so when the new complementary insurance will take effect?

for example I bought myFlex Hospitalisation Insurance option 1 for 2019 but I was thinking about "upgrading" to option 2 "Premium" from option 1 "Economy as the co-payment is twice as high in my current option and I will probably go for a basic surgery in a private hospital and don't know much about the price.

Thanks a lot for your advice.

The upgrade to a higher coverage can be done whenever you want, therefore also mid of year. I gave a quick look at the T&C and they should not even require you to fill again the declaration about your health status. I couldn't find any information about their Karenzzeit (how long you shall wait before availing it). Just to be on the safe side, I would call them and ask.

Agree, I don't understand why you don't just call them or contact them on-line and ask - they have no problem usually with English

Because then they might notice what I'm up to and stop me.

Thanks, may I already contact the private hospital asking for an appointment with the surgeon(very popular, long waiting time) or it is better to wait to resolve this upgrade issue first?

I already sent them a message yesterday requesting an appointment with CSS before asking the question on the forum, I don't know how long this would take.

With your current option "Economy" you can only choose among selected hospitals. If the hospital you are willing to go, it's not in the list...I would definitely clarify first. It really takes only 5 minutes to call them and ask this specific question. But of course, you know better how urgent you need the surgery and what are your priorities.

I would wait and see how things stand with css first.

There is often a wait time before the extra benefits kick in. It would be too easy if people could take the upgrade a couple of weeks before they know they are going to need expensive surgery.

Thanks I am considering Clinique Beaulieu and it seems to be a private one. my surgery is not urgent. it is getting worse with time slowly. I am sorry I don't dare calling that 0844 number with my cellphone as I don't know how much it will cost me, hence addressed my inquiry online

Re: upgrade complementary insurance in the middle of the year

I hope you get your answer soon then

Quote:
Free numbers or numbers charged at the national rate
0800: calls to these numbers are free*
084x (0840, 0842, 0844, 0848): shared-cost service numbers: a uniform charge regardless of where in Switzerland the call is made from, with a maximum charge of CHF 0.075 per minute (+VAT, the maximum charge of a national call to the fixed network).
* Exceptions: an extra charge may apply when calls are made from a call box or from abroad.

I don't know this supplementary coverage with CSS, so I don't want to say anything inaccurate. Depending on the surgery involved, many factors shall be considered (i.e: is the treatment even covered by basic insurance? which kind of basic insurance you have? etc. etc.)

Re: upgrade complementary insurance in the middle of the year

If you already have complementary insurace with CSS, upgrading to the next step should be no issue. They've already vetted you previously when they accepted you for Economy.

The benefits for Premium will require a "waiting" time. The problem now is finding how long is this waiting time. You can scour thru the fine-prints of your contract (or online). But nothing is more definite that contacting CSS directly. CSS has a customer portal (online and free) to send inquiries. I send my inquiries in English and usually get a reply in a day or two. I prefer written contact over phone as it leaves a "paper-trail" for later.

Contact CSS, ask directly how long is the waiting time and don't bother to "hide" it, I'm sure you're not the first one with this intention. These guys are no idiots, they know the tricks customer are up to.
